やっぱりえばっている人、階級で差別する人、人事権で威嚇する人などがいっぱい出てくる。

しかし著者は、医務官として仕事をするうちに、外交官と医者の世界に共通点が多いことに気づき始める。

どれだけ患者が"我慢して"医者の勧める検査や治療に従ってきたか、医務室でひとり奮闘し、今までどれだけ看護婦など多くの人に医者が支えられてきたかを知るのである。

こういうことを書かれると，困る高級官僚がいっぱいいることでしょうね。でも、外務大使が一般の旅行者・国民に対して侮蔑的な感情を持っていることは、実際に会ってみればすぐにわかります。我々の税金で給料をもらっているのに、こちらが挨拶しているのにも関わらず「ふん」といった表情でそっぽを向く。子供の頃からエリートで、お前らとは違うんだという考えがありありです。彼等は日本の本給の他に出張手当てがその２倍以上支給されていて、どちらの国にも税金を払っていないというのも本当です。さらに、特別予算が支給されていて，三ツ星レストランで高級ワインを飲んでも，税金で支払いになります。めちゃくちゃな特権階級です。実は外交予算は今の半分でいいのでは、、。

4.0 out of 5 stars 「白い巨塔」の世界から「伏魔殿」へ。, 2004/7/25
著者は大阪大学医学部医局に所属する外科医だった。当時、末期医療は今ほど注目されておらず、処置の施しようのなくなった患者の対処に悩み、苦悩する日々が続く。そんな時、ふと目にした外務省の医務官募集記事に心動かされる。そうして始まった外国での「医務官」稼業。サウジアラビア、オーストリア、パプアニューギニアの３カ国に、合計９年間滞在することとなる。

まず思い知らされたのが、大使館には看護士がいないこと。何から何まで自分一人でしなくてはならない。今まで多くの人に支えられていたことに、今更ながら初めて気付く。

内容は、秘密主義、急患にトロくさいお役所仕事、序列主義、長期休暇、大使晩餐会、議員接待、公開斬首刑、犬の糞、「ラスカル」の恐怖に、バラマキ援助の功罪など盛り沢山、そしてとっても面白い。各国の医療事情についても興味深い。薬品用冷蔵庫にチョコレートはご愛嬌。

瘴癘度の高い地域での、生活の不便や健康の不安（国によっては身の危険も！）は納得したが、それでも、恐らく、９年間で様々な手当も合わせて著者の懐には億を越える貯金ができたであろう。（それで妬みを込めて星４つに。）
しかし、何故、著者は医務官を辞めたのだろうか。お子さんの教育のためだろうか。その理由については触れられていない。
