掲載されている背景画などは７３枚（うち 見開き１６枚）
（ほかにサムネイルでの掲載もあるが、これはおまけ程度です。）
制作風景を写真入りで６ページ分。
背景美術に関するページは２６ページ分と１９ページ分。
（「技法」と「表現」とに分かれて掲載されており、
　　沢山の絵もありますが文章による説明を補填する形です。）
田中直哉氏との対談が８ページ分。鉛筆によるレイアウトが沢山掲載されている。
コラムでは、デジタル技法と筆に関すること。

いたるところに絵があふれている本です。
背景美術に興味のある人は、読んで得るところが多いと思う。

　これは技術書としても有効かと思います。
　もののけ姫の背景美術を順を追って、それぞれ「何を意識したか」「どうやって描いたか」「何を使って描いたか」ぜんっぶ説明してくださいます。

　絵の具のこと。筆のこと。紙のこと。風景画のこと。男鹿さんのこと。みんな語ってくれます。
　他にも男鹿さん以外の背景マンが手がけた作品がずらりずらり。インタビューもあり。

　なぜこんなにも美しいか。理屈でも、情感でも教えてくれる、すばらしい一冊。

　『もののけ姫』の神秘的な森、『平成狸合戦ポンポコ』の懐かしい山里の風景など、日本的な風土の背景美術を描くことに定評のある男鹿氏が手がけた作品を紹介した画集というよりは、筆や絵の具といった道具類にはじまり、「水張り」、「地塗り」、「筆使い」、「光源の捉え方」、「遠近感」、「省略と誇張」、「レイアウトと構図」、「色彩」など、実際に描いていく上での表現方法やテクニックを、男鹿氏が手がけた『もののけ姫』や『平成狸合戦ポンポコ』などの実例を踏まえて解説している点が、本書の特徴です。キャラクターを背景画に重ねるためには、時としてリアルで緻密な画風よりも、アニメらしい演出などからも大胆な「省略と誇張」が必要になってくることを、美術ボード、背景画、美術設定などとの対比を通じて、教えてくれる内容がビジュアル的にも素晴らしく、その場の空気を描くような質感まで表現する技法も含めて、ジブリ作品が好きで、絵を描く人には格好のお手本だともいえるでしょう。個人的には、『平成狸合戦ポンポコ』に出てくるショベルカーを前面に富士山を遠景に配した冬晴れの宅地造成地の風景が、澄み切った感じあって好きです。また、上記にあげたニ作品意以外にも、三鷹の森ジブリ美術館で展示された『コロの大さんぽ』などもあります。
