勾玉シリーズの続きではないけれども、
あちこちに、その後の物語が感じられる。

平安時代の終わり、院政がとられ、平氏と源氏の争いと
武家社会への変換期のはざまの物語で、
主人公の草十郎は源氏側についた坂東武者として
保元の乱に参戦する。
その後落ち延び、後の源頼朝を救い、一度は武士としての
生き方を失い、自分自身を見失う。

天からの花を降らす舞を舞う糸世と出会い、
運命さえも変えることが出来る笛の音を鳴らす草十郎。
自分の笛の音の力に気づかず、無心無欲で吹き続け、
ついに人の寿命を変えてしまったとき、
入れ違いに糸世を失ってしまう。
今までは生死などどうでもいいと思っていた草十郎が、
糸世と出会って生きる苦しみと喜びに気づき、
糸世を取り戻すために運命を切り拓く。

待望の日本を舞台にしたファンタジーで、
読み応えも読後感も十分満足できる。
後白河上皇の熊野御幸や八咫烏などとも繋がって、
熊野古道や吉野、京都を歩いてみたい気分になった。

今までの勾玉三部作を知らなくても読めます。（でも知っていれば鳥彦王が現れたときの喜びなどなどが倍増すると思います。）手に取ったときの厚さにはじめは「うおっ！」と思いましたが、読んでいるうちにそんなこと気にならなくなりました。さすが荻原さんです！

荻原さんの作品が他のファンタジーと違うのは「ぐいぐい引っ張って読ませる物語」という賛辞が似合わないこと。時間をかけてゆっくり読んでいきたいと思わせるものを、この作品は持っています。勾玉三部作へのつながりは生きているし、モチーフもやっぱり似ている。そういう意味では新境地と呼べるものではないのかもしれないけれど、今まの荻原さんの作品にあった全ての要素をこの作品は含んでいるような気がしました。そして何より鳥彦王、素敵・・・。
