僕は石田さんの作品に対して、池袋ウエストゲートパーク等の作品を読んで好感を抱いていた。だからこの本が書店に並んで石田さんの名前を見たとき、面白いのだろうと思った。それぐらい良い印象を持っていた。
実際にこの作品は読んでみてそれなりに面白かった。だが一つだけどうしても気になることがある。それは書店でこの本の題名を見たときから感じていた。
この小説は、スティーヴン・キングの「暗黒の塔」シリーズとあまりにも設定が似通っているのではないか？ということだった。石田さんよりもキングのほうが好きなので、僕は少しショックだった。
なによりも僕はこの本より「暗黒の塔」の方が面白いと思った。
興味のある方は是非読み比べてみてはいかが？

娼年やうつくしい子どもで、いい作家だなと思って、
それ以来、微妙と思う作品にも出会ったが、
ずっと購入し読み続けている。

なのに、新作が出るほどに
つまらなく、雑多になってきているのがとても哀しい。

このところ短編ばかりだったので、
久々の長編に少し期待したけれど、
いまひとつだった。

確かに面白く読めるところも多々あるけれど、
読むほどにこの人のナルシストぶりに興ざめしてしまうのだ。
設定の甘さ、心情描写の幼稚さも鼻につくし、
もはやこれまでなのだろうか？

とか言いつつアキハバラDEEPを買った私。
しかし、これがつまらなかったら、
もう二度とこの人の単行本は買わないだろうと思う。

石田氏の作品としては、かなり長い小説だが、一度読むと読むのがやめられない。短編ないし中編の作品が多い印象のある作家で
あるので、その点では意外性を突かれた。
しかし、内容的にいえば平凡、というか「お約束」の積み重ねでさほど斬新さを感じることはない。読んでいる間は確かに楽しいが、
一度読んだらもう十分という気がしないでもない。
石田氏が好きな人にはオススメするが、そうでない人にはちょっと勧めにくい印象がある。
