第5回松本清張賞受賞作である「陰の季節」の作品中に登場した、平野瑞穂を主人公とした短編集である。2003年春、フジテレビ系列で、ドラマ化された。
作者の他の作品と同様、警察を舞台とした作品であるが、一人の婦警を主人公に据えた短編集は、初めての試みである。

他の横山作品を読んでこの作品を手にされる場合は、同レベルを期待しない方がよいと思う。平野巡査の成長を描く作品と割り切って読んだ方がよい。２編目以降はままあなので、１編目「魔女狩り」で挫折しないで読み通して頂きたい。

個人的な意見としては、ミステリーとしては今ひとつである。とはいえ、作者のレベルからすれば今ひとつということで、一般的にいえば星４つでもよいかもしれない。
ドラマをきっかけに本作で初めて横山作品に触れる方は、是非、他の横山作品もお試しください。

　女性似顔絵捜査官・平野瑞穂の活躍を描いた連作短編集。ところが、なぜか左遷されていて、広報課でクサッています。
　本書は作者の短編集『陰の季節』に収録されている『黒い線』の後日談となっています。左遷の詳しい理由を知りたい方は、まずはこちらを読んでから。さすれば感動倍増です（いきなり読むと星４つかな？）

「平野瑞穂。巡査を拝命して五年目の２２歳。今風の小顔美人だが、淡い印象の娘である。だが芯は通っている。婦警に憧れ、人のために役立ちたいという思いに嘘も遊びもない」--『黒い線』で紹介されている平野巡査像です。
　社会人になって会社のしがらみに嫌気がさした、なんてお嘆きのあなたにお勧め。

婦警という男性警察官に比べ軽んじられる立場でありながら、正義を守るため悪に立ち向かう平野瑞穂の頑張り、苦悩、成長の様子がよく分かる。一人の人物にのみ着目するという点では、横山氏の作品の中では異色であるが、その分一人の人物像が他の作品に比べよく現れており、またその人物の成長の様子が見て取れるという意味では他の横山氏の作品よりも感情移入しやすいといえるであろう。
