そして、えぐい。5つのストーリーがあって、日本古来の妖怪を現代によみがえらせ、新解釈をほどこしてあります。その点で京極夏彦に似ているのですが、これはまったく別物です。

とにかく、怖い。特に、第3話の「怖い目」。目の不自由な人だけが暮らし、目の見える人は入れないという島があって、噂によると、その島にいけば、見えなかった目が見えるようになるという。ただし、その島から出てきたものは一人もいない……妖怪百目をベースに作られたこの話、鳥肌がたちすぎて、眠れませんでした。生涯悪夢として私にとり憑いて離れないと思われます(T-T)
突拍子も無く、荒唐無稽な展開にもかかわらず、文章にスピード感があるので、最後まで一気に読みきれます。いいホラー小説家に出会えたと満足です。

取り替えっ子、百目など、登場する妖怪は、純粋な日本民間伝承の住人ではなく少年時代に夢中になって読んだ、子供向けのおどろおどろしい妖怪図鑑(佐藤有文などの)から題をとっている。それだけでも妖怪好きにはウレシイ。が、この作者は気持ちの悪い描写を描かせたら、平山夢明に匹敵もしくは越えるほどなので、そういうのが苦手な人にはお薦めしません。「怖い目」は、読む人によっては、そこはかとない嘔吐感をもたらすほどです。

「禍記」。人間が手を触れてはならない書物。カタロヒナ文字で
書かれた日本最古の歴史書であるが、その内容によって歴史の闇に葬り
去られた。それには、人類が生まれる前に存在した妖怪の真実が
記されているという。多くの国学者、古代史研究家がその謎を
探ろうとしたが、みな、途中で行方不明になってしまったために
禁忌の書とされる。

たにいさんの書評を読んで買いました。読み終わって一言、イヤな
本を読んでしまった。この本には禍記に関わってしまったものの
行く末が書かれています。田中氏は人が見て気持ち悪くなるなるものを
描写することが得意で、彼の書く妖怪たちを読んでいると気分が悪くなります。
ここに書かれている妖怪たちが、一線を越えてこっちの世界にやち?て
来そうで怖い。体調の悪いときに読むことはお勧めしません。

幻の蝶を求めていった「天使蝶」、目を病んだ者だけが住む島の話「怖い目」などが
気持ち悪かったが、なんと言っても間に挿入された「禍記」が不気味でした。
禍記を捜し求める女性編集者の話なのですが、あちらの世界からひたひたと
何かが近づいて、おいでおいでする描写がなんともいえません。
