著者のトムブラウンの自伝でもあるこの本は、ネイティブアメリカンの技のひとつであるトラッキングを彼が習得していく過程をカッコ良く書かれている。実際この本からは"男"の匂いがしてくる。そして、土や川そして野生の動物たち息遣いも感じられるだろう。著者の自然に対する畏敬の念、崇拝そしてその一部となっていく描写には、彼の人生が本当に彼と一体となっていく過程を一緒に感じることができる。自然を愛し、自然と自分が一体であることを教えてくれる一冊。またトッラキングによる行方不明者を探す様子が事細かに書かれている部分は、探す方と探される方の心理描写が大変おもしろくハラハラさせる。久々に読むのがやめられない本だ。

「伝説のトラッカー」として全米で知られているトム・ブラウン・ジュニア氏の処女作。トラッカーとは、森に残された足跡からありとあらゆる情報を読み取る高度なトラッキングの技術を持つ者のことである。アパッチ族の古老ストーキング・ウルフから技術を授けられた彼のトラッカーとしての半生が描かれている。「足跡」に何の興味もなかった私がこの本を読んで以来トラッキングの世界に魅了され続けている。同じく日本語訳の出ている「グランドファーザー」「ハンテッド」とともに是非読んでもらいたい本。

宗教の聖書に相当するものは、理由もなしで「こうしなさい」とか、「こうしてはいけない」などと押しつける場合が多いが、この本を読めばアメリカン・インディアンが「なぜ大地を敬い、水を敬い、動物を尊敬し、人間は自然の一部であると考えているのか」という理由が分かるだろう。もちろん、少年時代にトラッカー修行を受けた著者の様々な冒険談は読んでいて引き込まれるほど面白いが、アメリカン・インディアンの古来のライフスタイルにもしっかりと焦点がある。現代社会を生きる上でもトラッキングによるサバイバル術は十分通用するだろう。厚い割にはあっという間に読めてしまう本だ。翻訳に多少難点があるのだが、真意は十分に伝わるだろう。

足跡で行方不明者の捜索する人の本？うさん臭っ！わくわく・・・と読み始めたが、そんなうさん臭いもんでなく、トラッキングとは地道な作業なんだと知りました。
