繰り返して読めば読むほど、自分の中に深くしみこんでくる傑作。
初読で「おもしろい！」となるのは白鳥異伝ですが、この薄紅天女は
とても奥が深く、一度目より二度目、二度目より三度目がおもしろい
作品です。

荻原規子さんの文章も、処女作の時期に比べてかなり洗練されており、
日本語のリズムの美しさがすばらしいです。
（空色勾玉も処女作ならではの雰囲気が大好きですが）

主人公の阿高（蝦夷の姫と竹芝の総領息子との間に生まれた子）と
苑上（桓武天皇の正室の皇女）の二人の物語。

竹芝伝説をモチーフにしており、ラストの展開は必見です。

一番おすすめなのは１０代のうちに読むことですが、
薄紅天女の主人公たちは比較的思慮深いので、大人になってから
読んでも大丈夫です。

個人的に荻原規子さんの最高傑作だと思っています。
おすすめです。

菅原孝標の娘(1008-?)が書いた更科日記に，竹芝伝説がある．今の港区白金を通りかかった菅原一家が古い建造物の礎石を見て里の人に話を聞く: 昔宮中に出仕したここの若者が帝の皇女に是非にと頼まれて皇女を都から七日七夜で連れ帰って夫婦になって住んだ跡だ，とのこと．この途方もない伝説にはある程度の痕跡が続日本紀に残っている．我らの著者はこの話を坂上田村麻呂の蝦夷征討，桓武帝を悩ませた物の怪を背景に，前作では使えなかった日高見の国の勾玉を持つ若者の話として，武蔵，蝦夷，伊勢，そして長岡京を舞台として描き切って見せた．その感動は予想をはるかに超えるものだった．勾玉三部作の締めくくりにふさわしい傑作．なお，薄紅天女自身は具体的には現れない．

苑上と阿高しか挿絵になっていない（藤太は残念ながら背中！）のがとても残念です。前２作は、私としては本当に主人公の恋物語を背景に歴史が動いていたのに対して、この物語は自分の人生、生き方、友情、過去ということが背景のテーマになっていて、それに恋がまるで苦しむ主人公達を救うかのように描かれていると思います。
それだけに登場人物を1人1人もっとピックアップしても良い（ということは、少なくとも３冊？）くらいです。とてもお互いにとっての「天女たち」が華やかに（表現ができないけれど・・・）描かれている物語です。けっこう薬子の仲成姿も見たかったりする･･･。「風神秘沙」も早く小さい版を出版して欲しいです。
