本書は、荻原規子氏の手になる勾玉３部作の２番目に位置する物語で、
ヤマトタケル伝説を下敷きに幼馴染の少年・少女の成長と大和朝廷の
権力をめぐる抗争を描く長編ファンタジーです。３部作はそれぞれ
独立した物語ですので、この本から読んでも大丈夫です。（私もそう
でした）
とにかく本作はストーリーテリングを見ても、キャラクターの立たせ
方を見ても、これと言って欠点が見つからない、読み出したらとまら
ない良作です。これほどの作品が世の中にあまり喧伝されることがな
かったのは、ひとつには最初出版されたときに児童書として世に出た
からではないでしょうか。しかし、そういう枠にはおさまらない豊穣
な物語ですので、新書になったこの機に是非一読をおすすめします。
古代日本を舞台にしていると、何やら暗い話のように思われがちです
が、勝気な性格の主人公・遠子姫や、女たらしの憎めない好青年菅流
（すがる）、いまでいうツンデレ？の像子姫など、明るいキャラクタ
ーが大勢登場しますのでご心配なく。
むしろ私が感心したのは、マジックアイテム的なギミックをもった３
種の神器と少し生々しさのあるメタファーをうまく使って、各シーン
をとても印象的にしていることです。
オビの台詞も印象的でした「ひとりの手には輝の剣、ひとりの手には
闇の勾玉、神代の力を手にしたときに世界の果てに離れてしまった」
この一文ですべて表しています。
それにしてもこういった良書が新書になる、よい時代になったもので
すね。

はじめて読んだ時の感動が忘れられません。
文庫化を待ってたんですが、ノベルス版は値段もお得だし
何より読む時腕が痛くならない！（笑）
おすすめです。

荻原規子作品で一番の傑作は薄紅天女だと思っていますが、
「一番おもしろい作品は何か」ときかれたら、もしくは、
「荻原作品をひとつだけ読もうと思うけど何がいい？」
「一番泣ける荻原作品は？」
「１０代の女性に一番おすすめなのは？」
ときかれたら、迷わずこれをすすめます。

元々児童書として出版されましたが、ストーリーの
おもしろさ、キャラの魅力度、とにかくおもしろいです。
息をつかせぬおもしろさ、という感じ。
ジェットコースターに乗っているようと表現した方も
いるほど、とにかくいっきに駆け抜けるおもしろさです。

主役は幼なじみ同士の小倶那（おぐな）と遠子（とおこ）。
そこに、魅力的な脇役がもりもり登場します。
アニキ系な魅力の菅流（すがる）がかっこいいです。
（勝手なイメージですが、ロックオン・ストラトスとか、
彩雲国の燕青っぽい感じのアニキです）

荻原作品を読むなら、白鳥異伝は必読です。
