新堂冬樹の「溝鼠」はどう見ても上品な内容ではない。
この小説の登場人物の誰か一人にでも感情移入できる人とはお付き合いしたくない。だが、面白いことは確かだ。

「溝鼠」は変に過剰である。そこまで書くのは変だろうと普通なら考えそうなところまで新堂冬樹は突き進んでいく。いや、内容が残酷すぎるとか変態的すぎると言っているのではない。残酷な小説なら他にいくらでもあるし、変態的な小説もいくらでもあろう。関心が微妙に違うのだ。新堂冬樹はことさらに「変な」部分を拡大してみせる。後半、二人のいい大人がトイレに駆け込む優先順位を巡って争うシーン（状況は結構切迫している）があるのだが、普通の作家だったら、まあ、あんな理由での争いは書かないだろう。

なんでもそうであろうが、過剰は崇高さに近い場合もあるし滑稽に近い場合もある。「溝鼠」はどう考えても後者である。新堂冬樹がそこを狙っているのかどうかはわからない。ただ、滑稽なくらい過剰な「溝鼠」は、確かに典型である。

新堂冬樹をバルザックにたとえたら褒めすぎだろうが、「溝鼠」はバルザックの「ゴリオ爺さん」をさえ連想させるほど、ある典型を描いていると言えるだろう。

「血塗られた神話」、「闇の貴族」、「ろくでなし」、「無間地獄」と読んできて本作を読んだ訳ですが、なんだかちょっと間延びしたカンジは否めません。なぜかと言うと、さほど重要とも思えない（作者にとっては重要かもしれませんが...）変態的行為や性的シーンにかなりのページを割いていて、それがスピード感、テンポのよさをなくしてしまっているような...　前出の４作に比べると、オトナ向け雑誌に連載してた小説なの？みたいなカンジは否めません。それでもストーリー的には十分楽しめました。

寝る間を惜しむ事無く読んだ本です。
作家の書き方が上手く気づいたら物語りに引きずり込まれていました。
表紙にも書いてある通り過激な内容だとは思いますが、私には至って普通の内容に感じました。
又、他の作家には無いような魅力を感じた本です。
過激な内容が大丈夫な方には是非お勧めの本です。
