腐海の菌類は土壌にたまった毒を無害化するために働いている。大地の毒を結晶化しつくすと再び清浄な土と水と空気がよみがえり、人類はもとのように暮らすことができる。映画の『風の谷のナウシカ』はそのような設定のもと「森と共に生きよう」というメッセージを残して終わる。

ところが、コミック版第４巻では、そのような予定調和の世界が全く存在しないことが暗示される。

ユパは腐海を歩きながら、不思議な少年セルムに問う。腐海の最深部は1000年前に生まれたはず。そこにはもう浄化された世界があるのではないか？と。

森の人の一族は森の中だけで暮らすことができる。腐海の中をどこまでもどこまでも、最深部まで行けるはずだ。腐海の毒が尽きた世界までたどり着き、そこがどのような世界であるかを知っているのではないかという疑問がわくのは当然だ。ところが、セルムは答える「それを語ることは禁じられている」と。

腐海の毒が浄化され尽くした世界は必ずあるはずだ。ところが、それについて語ることがタブーとなっているのは何故だろう？　その答えは第７巻になってようやく明かされる。壮大な物語の転換点となったのが、この第４巻なのだ。それにしても、宮崎駿氏の頭の中には、この時点ですでに物語り全体の構想と落着点が見えていたということに驚く。その他、この巻には、たくさんの伏線が張ってあることに、後になって気づく。それもまた恐ろしい話だ。

３巻までの華やかな戦絵巻から打って変わって、４巻の内容は沈鬱です。人間の手で始められた戦争が人間のコントロールを超えたところで転がり始め、物語の雰囲気が少しずつ変わって行きます。
始まりつつある絶望的な破局の中、子守唄を歌うクシャナが印象的でした。

「ナウシカ」の魅力は、なんといっても、その世界観。この世界に通じる、国と国、人と人、そして考えの違いから生まれる、対立。そんな、人間の持つ、醜さ、儚さ、そして、そんな困難な世界の中でも、決して、自分を見失わない人間達の強さが、マンガを通して、こちらにも伝わってくるような気がしました。まさに、傑作と呼ぶにふさわしいものだと思います。
