映画しか見てない方、ぜひ原作にもトライしてみて下さい。全く違った魅力があります。
映画のストーリーは大体この二巻の前半あたりまでをまとめたもので、以後原作のストーリーは完全に映画から離れて展開します。一巻では本業でない漫画にやや手間取ってギクシャクした印象のある筆致がこのあたりから安定し、少し読みやすくなるはずです。

自分の意志で故郷を離れ、異国へ足を踏み入れるナウシカの旅も、この巻から始まります。

弟１巻では、自分の持つ力、族長の娘としての責任感、蟲たちへの愛情などのはざまで悩み、揺れ動いていたナウシカ。この巻でははっきりとした使命を定めて行動し始めたように見える。闘いの中で成長したのだ。

映画版のストーリーの骨格はほとんどこの巻に描かれている。トルメキア軍への反撃のため、土鬼軍は人工的に培養した王蟲の子どもを使う。怒った王蟲たちは大群となってクシャナの軍を襲う。

王蟲の攻撃をなんとか食い止めたナウシカは、クシャナとともに腐海を南下して、土鬼とトルメキア軍の最前線へと向かう。腐海と大海しょうの謎を解くために。苦しく長い旅の幕開けだが、まっすぐに行く末を見定めるナウシカの目が美しい。

　第２巻（「アニメージュ」1982年10月号〜1983年５月号掲載作品）から、アニメ映画には全く出てこなかったキャラクターが登場し、話自体がかなり違った展開になっていくんですねぇ。「こんなに違っているのか！」と、驚いてしまった。
　映画では登場しないキャラで特に印象深かったのが、土鬼（ドルク）の中の一種族、マニ族の長である「目の見えない僧正」。森の主である王蟲（オーム）と並んで、少女ナウシカの不思議で大いなる力に、真に気づいた存在。映画では風の谷の大ババさまが語る魅力的な台詞を、漫画では、この「目の見えない僧正」が語っています。
　キャラクターではもうひとり、トルメキア王国の第四皇女クシャナの描かれ方が、アニメ映画よりもずっと複雑で、深い気がしました。映画では、ストーリーの変化のせいもあって、彼女の存在感が随分と薄められてしまっていますね。トルメキア王国の王位継承権が話の背景として描かれているかどうか。この辺も、原作と映画の印象がかなり違ったものになっているひとつの要因でしょう。
　本巻に出てきた新しい言葉では、「大海嘯（だいかいしょう）」というのが目を引きましたね。大ババさまの説明によれば、「大海嘯とは、腐海（ふかい）がとつじょ沸きかえり、津波のように押し寄せてくることなのじゃ･･･（後略）」。この大海嘯が、トルメキアと土鬼との戦争において、重要な鍵を握りそうな予感がします。
　本書の冒頭に折り込まれたカラーの口絵、表にナウシカ、裏にクシャナが描かれた絵もよかったなあ。テトを肩にしたナウシカのラフな姿以上に、私は、赤の背景の前に、鎧をまとって腰かけたクシャナ皇女のカラー絵に魅了されました。
