　本放送終了からかなり経ってからの発売でしたが、待っただけあって非常に丁寧なつくりになっています。普通のアニメのムック本と見た目は同じですが、中身はかなり詳細で作りこまれており、スタッフさんたちの協力や、エディター・デザイナーさんの丁寧な作業を容易に想像できるはず。

　あまり表に出ない磯光雄監督のインタビューはじめ、監督の細かいコメント入りの各話ガイド、作画チーフ井上俊之さんのセレクトによる原画集（タイムシートこそ無いもののたっぷり10カット分）、絵コンテ・原画から撮影・CG・色設計までのスタッフさん約20人のコメントを顔写真入りでページを相当割いてくれていること（もちろん声優さんたちも）、各話スタッフ表などなど、盛りだくさんな内容となっています。販促イラストなど、オリジナルがカラーの資料は絶対にカラー、設定や表情集など白黒の資料は一色印刷で収録というこだわりも素敵ですし、美術ボード（エンディングの背景など）もトリミング無しのオールカラー。アイビーグリーンを基調とした落ち着いたデザインで、発色も申し分ありません。表紙は井上さんの描き下ろし、カバーをはずすとラフ画が載っています。時折挿入されるカットも設定資料だったりと、全体的にサービスが多い。

　要望といえばスタッフさんたちのコメントに出てくる用語についての解説が欲しかったことくらいで、ちょっと高めの値段も我慢。ジブリお膝元の徳間書店だからでしょうか、ツボを押さえた編集が見事です。

5つの章から構成されています。第1章は「キャラクターファイル」として、全てのキャラクター（例、用務員のおじさんも含む、26頁）と電脳アイテムの説明があります。第2章の「ストーリーガイド」ではオープニングとエンディングの作画、年表、各話紹介（本書編集者および磯光雄監督のコメント付き）があります。第3章は「設定資料ファイル」となっていて、キャラクターの造形の基本設定やキーワード事典があるなど最もマニアックな章となっています。第4章は「メイキング・オブ・『電脳コイル』」です。磯監督、井上俊之作画チーフ、作画監督、声優などの製作関係者の方々のインタビューが掲載されています。その中で磯監督は「リアル」と「リアリティ」を異なるものと見なしており、自身は「リアリティ」を追求し、「受け取る人がそのビジュアルをどう受け取るか」（94頁）にこだわりがあると述べています。また井上作画チーフは『電脳コイル』にはスタジオジブリやAプロダクションに共通する「独特の曲線」（101頁）、つまり丸みのある線が特徴だと語っています。最後の第5章は「アート・オブ・『電脳コイル』」となっていて、舞台となった大黒市のマップや暗さが印象的な美術ボードが収録されています。
本書は文章を読んでも絵を見ても『電脳コイル』の魅力を味わえます。そして同時に『電脳コイル』が製作者の方々の熱意と愛情によって生み出された傑作の一つであることを実感させてくれる一冊でもあります。

まだ本編を全部見てなくても 先が気になってどうしようもない人は買った方がいいと思います。

これには全話のあらすじ、月刊誌に掲載されたイラスト、作中の用語の解説、絵コンテ、スタッフのインタビュー、隠し設定等が載っています。

僕はまだDVD六巻から先の内容は知りませんでしたが、この本を見て余計アニメが楽しみになってしまいました。よくできた攻略本のような本です。
