『人攫いの岡嶋』とまで言われた誘拐物の大御所、岡嶋二人の傑作だと思います。アイデアだけでなく、その文体も非常に緊張感があり、作品をビシッと引き締めています。

　誘拐ものは岡嶋二人の得意とする所ですが、これはその中でも最高傑作との呼び声も高い代表作です。また、俗に「後期３部作」とも称される作品群（他は『そして扉が閉ざされた』『クラインの壺』）の一つでもあります。

　誘拐というテーマは、どうやら“本格”志向の人には敬遠されがちのようです。かくいう僕も以前はその傾向があったのですが、まあ兎に角、ミステリ好きならば是非読んで頂きたいのです。ハイクオリティなミステリ・スピリットが横溢してますよ。ジャンルとか関係ないです。言わずもがな、岡嶋二人一流のサスペンスフルな筆の運びにぐいぐい引っ張られてしまう事も保証できます。

　また、当時のハイテク技術を駆使したストーリー展開も魅力たっぷりですが、そうした先端知識というものは、時代と共に色褪せてしまいがちなのが宿命でもある中、この作品に関してはその心配は無用です。古臭さは感じられません。知識に依存しているのではなく、何よりも先ず物語の骨格となるプロットが秀逸な故でしょう。寧ろ、当時はそういう状況だったのか、などと純粋に好奇心を刺激されたりもしました。云ってみれば、例えば現在のハイテク技術に置き換えても、物語の輝きは何ら曇る事はない、とも言えるでしょうか。
　結末のつけ方も切れ味鋭いですよ。

そもそも私はミステリーのサブジャンルとしての「誘拐もの」が大好きだ。理由として、

１．あまり殺人事件に発展しないので血腥さがすくない。

２．犯人と捜査側（誘拐被害者）の唯一の接点、身代金受け渡しの際の双方のやりとりの緊迫感・スリル・サスペンスが現在進行形で進む。

３．加えてその際の犯人側が捜査側をまんまと欺く巧緻な知的トリックの鮮やかさ。が挙げられる。

数多くの「誘拐ミステリー」があるが、私のベストスリーは、高木彬光の『誘拐』、法月綸太郎の『一の悲劇』、原りょうの直木賞受賞作『私が殺した少女』である。これらはいずれも上記三つの「誘拐ミステリー」としての醍醐味を味わわせてくれたばかりかプラスαの魅力にあふれた作品だった。

さて本書は２０年の時を隔てて起こる２つの誘拐事件の物語である。当時としては最先端のＩＴ技術を駆使した、犯人側の少年誘拐方法と身代金奪取のプロセスは、巧緻を極めていて、あっと驚かずにはいられないが、もともと’８８年に初めて出版された本だが、今現在読んでも全く古さを感じさせない。

加えて本書の最大の魅力はすぐれた「誘拐ミステリー」であると同時に、いやそれ以上に一人の青年の２０年間の恨みを込めた執念の復讐劇であるところだ。
