「川の深さは (講談社文庫)」「亡国のイージス （講談社文庫）」同様の、「完璧に訓練された、能力抜群の工作員」と「悩めるダメ中年」のパターンの繰り返しか...と思いきや、本作での主人公や、ローズダストの工作員たちはずっと人間味を増している。戦闘能力は抜群ではあるが、若さゆえに悩み、苦しみ、訓練課程では否定されていたはずの友情と任務の狭間で苦悶する、そんな姿が描かれている。本作品の並河警部補は今までの作品でいう仙石曹長や平曹長、警備員の桃山同様ではあるが、実生活はそこまで破たんしているわけでもなく、絶望と諦観を持ちつつも、それなりに現実社会に適応して生きているところも合わせて、これらのキャラクターをよりリアルに感じさせている。
作品の持つメッセージは従来の作品群とは変わらないものの、序盤でほのめかされる事情がだんだんと明るみになり、現在につながる謎が解き明かされ、そこからは息をもつかせぬアクションの連続で一気にたたみかける展開はシリーズでも最高の出来、本当に途中で本を閉じるのが難しいほどだ。
映画化せずにはいられないスケールだと思うが、上映時間の枠内に収めるのは不可能だろうな...といらぬ心配までしたりもする。
