加藤 廣
1930年東京生まれ。都立新宿高校から東京大学法学部に学び、54年に中小企業金融公庫に入庫し、京都支店長、本店調査部長などを歴任。山一證券に転じ、同経済研究所顧問、埼玉大学経済学部講師などを経て、中小企業やベンチャー企業のコンサルタントを務めるかたわら、ビジネス書の執筆や講演活動を行う。2005年に構想15年の書き下ろし長篇『信長の棺』で作家デビュー(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

作品の着想および、筆者の文章に関してはいうことはありません。
しかしながらストーリー展開が今一つでした。
作品全体で本筋から離れたシーンに割かれているページ数が多く、
読む時間が無駄になるのみならず、作品の流れを失念しそうになります。
上巻を読んでいる間は伏線かと思っていたのですが・・・。
また、最後の方の展開もやややっつけに感じました。
どちらかといえば小説より新書で読みたい本です。

この物語は本格歴史ミステリーといっていいと思うが、過去何回もモチーフにされてきた「本能寺の変」における織田信長の遺骸未発見の謎がメインテーマである。

信長唯一の伝記「信長公記」の作者であり、かつて信長と秀吉に仕えた元武士の著述家、太田牛一が主人公となり、この謎に迫る。

著者は牛一の視点を通して、すでに何人もの作家や歴史家が挑んでおり、いささか手垢がついた感のある「本能寺の変」の謎の真相ばかりでなく、「織田信長」その人の人物評価をはじめ、「桶狭間の戦い」の真相や「太閤秀吉」の出自にいたるまで、客観的・論理的に新しい解釈をしている。本書がベストセラーとなっている所以だろうが、私も「こんな斬新で大胆な見方もあったんだ」と興味深く読んだ。

著者はもともと経済・経営の専門家として、その著述・講演活動や企業の経営指導が高い評価を受けており、この作品が７５才にして初めて発表した小説とのことだが、とても作家第１作とは思えない筆力に圧倒された。

ハードカバーで出版されたのが3年前。その時も読みたかったんだけど、読まなかった。当時は、小泉首相の愛読書、なんて言われていてそれに乗っかるのがいやだった。

文庫化されたのをきっかけに読んでみた。

生きている信長は一切出てこず、本能寺の信長の死の真相、信長の遺骸を、信長の伝記作者が、追い求めるという話。

作者は、これを書いたとき75歳というから驚き。主人公も老年に差し掛かっているが、若々しく、著者もきっと、精力的な人なんだろう。魅力的な若い女と結ばれるシーンもいい（話としては甘すぎるが...）

時代小説に謎解きを加えて、とっても面白い小説になっている。

公文書の保存という仕事をしていた自分にとっては、後世に記録を残そうとする、主人公の気持ちはよく分かる。こういう人たちがいなければ、歴史って、伝わらなかったんだろう。もちろん、権力者の都合のいい歴史なのかもしれないが、そうではない、書き手もいたのだろう。
