この作品は面白いという範疇の小説でないが、人生というもの、人間存在の本質をより深く知りたいと思う人なら決して読んで損はない。
孤児になった二人だけの姉妹。とても愛し合い、お互い頼りにしていた。それなのに、仲違いしてしまう。仲たがいは深刻で、簡単に元に戻るものではない。作者は二人の心のあやを丁寧に解きほぐしてゆく。そこに人間というもの、生きて行くことの困難さが、圧縮して示される。悩みに悩み、努力を重ねた末、ついに思いがけない救済と解決が訪れる。ラストはこの本の帯に書かれているように清冽な感動が待っている。
物語の途中にも何か所か感動的な場面がある。亡くなった両親のために二人で遠くの公園に行って赤い風船を飛ばすところや、同じ公園で、飛行機事故で亡くなった恋人のために、模型飛行機を飛ばすところなど。
この世で生きて行くためには、生きて行けるだけの資力を稼がなければならない。二人はそれぞれの特質を生かして勉強もし、有意義な職業と地位を得た。しかし、それだけでは十分でなかった。生きて行くには、更に愛がなければならない。作者は、そのことをそれとなく主張している。読後感は暖かくさわやかである。
