自衛隊レーダー基地で起きた盗聴事件。主人公である語り手は、派遣された調査官の補佐役に任じられた若き三曹。捜査の進展につれて彼に生じる心境の変化が、読者にも共感できる形で描かれています。
ミステリは得手ではないけれど、謎解きのレベルはたぶんまあまあ。人物描写は、探偵役の朝霞二尉がとくに魅力的。ある面深刻なテーマを扱いつつも、全体的にユーモアを失わない。そして爽やかな読後感。
読んで損はない作品だと思いますよ、これは。さすが、メフィスト賞受賞は伊達じゃない（って、そういう賞があるなんて知らなかったけど）。
あまりわれわれが知る機会のない、自衛隊についてのあれこれが書かれているのも、なるほど感が高いですね。「〜士」は期間限定の契約隊員だなんて、あなた知ってました？

　航空自衛隊レーダー基地の隊長室の電話機に盗聴器がしかけられていたため、防衛部調査班から幹部が派遣されてくることになった。
　犯人は？そしてその目的は？
　防衛部調査班の朝香二尉のサポートをすることになった、監視隊の野上三曹の語りで描かれています。
　野上三曹は２２歳で入隊４年目。
　レーダー基地内の習慣や仕事についてはあたりまえのこととしてさりげなく説明されますが、盗聴器の事件の捜査をする朝香二尉の行動の不思議な点などについては、読むこちら側と同じに「変なことをする」という視点から見ているので
とても読みやすく計算された筋立てになっています。
　識別不明機（アンノウン）を発見した際のオペレーションルームの緊張感が見事に描写されていて興味深いものになっています。
　謎を解き明かしていく過程に無理がまったくなく、また犯人の動機やその後の処理なども納得がいく筋立てになっていてとても面白かったです。
　なにより、野上三曹の成長が清清しいので読後感がよい面白い本でした。

自衛隊内で起きるサスペンスですが、戦車もミサイルも出てきません。だから派手な演出もなく、謎解きもかなり地味ですが、自衛隊員が持つ挟持が強く感じられました。同時に戦う組織として成立させるための上官の苦悩と配慮も印象的でした。
最後のセリフが全体を引き締める決め手となっています。
