六編の短い小説は、それぞれ別の人物が主人公になっている。
最初は暁（あきら）、次は暁の下の妹 美希。　三作目は上の妹 沙恵。　四作目は暁の兄 貢、五作目が貢の娘 聡美、最後が暁の老父 重之。

暁と沙恵は戸籍上は義兄妹。　そう信じていたから ふたりは恋人として結ばれた。
ところがそうではなかった。
妹は暁の義母となった人の連れ子であるが、実は義母が父の愛人であった時にできた子供だった。
義母から本当のことを知らされ、暁は逆上して家を飛び出したきり戻ってくることはなかった。

この大事件は十数年前のできごと。　
義母の葬式をきっかけに一同が再会し、焦点をずらしながら、ひとりひとりの現在と過去のアルバムが
めくられて行く。

最初は渦中の兄と妹の物語に気をとられてしまうのだけれど、読み終わってみれば
最終章の 父親・重之の物語に尽きる。
村山由佳のように若い人が（1964年生まれ）、太平洋戦争をテーマにこれだけの内容を書いたことに
素直に感動した。
彼女はこの最終章によって直木賞を受賞したのだ。
今の時代、等身大のことだけを書く女流作家が多い中で、たいしたものだと思う。
わたしはこういうごっつい作品を書く人が好きだ。

読み終わってもしばらく、この作品の世界観から抜けられない。
私にとっては、それほど心動かされる作品でした。
ただ一言　オススメです。

父親の再婚で継母の連れ子としてやってきた妹と恋愛関係に陥る兄。
実はその妹は父親が継母と不倫していたときに出来た子どもだと知り、近親相姦に悩み妹と別れ、別の女性と結婚する兄。
話は、そこから始まっている。
だがこの話はその兄妹の話がメインではない。
過去の恋愛感情をいつまでも引きずる兄（次男）妹（長女）、イマイチ鈍臭くて会社の女の子となんとなく愛人関係になってしまう長男、不倫中の次女、美人の親友に好きな人を取られてしまった長男の娘、戦時中に従軍慰安婦を愛してしまった父親。
バラバラな話が、つながっていく。

もちろんひとつひとつを短編として読んでも面白い。
ただ、短編として読むとあまりに救いが無いように思う。

物語は最後、完結していない。
その後登場人物たちはどのように動いていったのか、気になる終わり方だ。
そこまで動いていける登場人物の作りこみは素晴らしいと思う。
「直木賞」と納得できる作品。
