3.0 out of 5 stars マンネリズムになりそうですが？, 2005/10/19
ホラー、本格、サスペンス、歴史、アクション物などなどのエッセンスをごちゃ混ぜにさせた作品を得意とするスレイドの文春文庫三作目です。髑髏島~ 、暗黒~ といった前二作では類まれなスリルと興奮の連続技で読書の触感を煽り、最後の一撃ともいえる犯人、謎解きで本格物ファンの涎を垂れ流させる展開、筆力への一般評価はかなり高いものと思う。但し本作は、雪男や首切り人といった異色の人物を、またまた登場させ、おきまりの最後の一撃をくらわせるが、そろそろマンネリズムも感じてしまうことが残念。物語の起承転結がパターン化してしまい、新鮮さが薄れてしまう感じがとても残念。一流から超一流になるか、二流作家になるかの、はたまたワンパターンをあくまで貫くのか、貫くならば Dカーのような完璧な作品を期待してしまうなー。

1.0 out of 5 stars とにかく読みづらいごった煮小説, 2010/1/29
警察小説という側面があるので、一人一人の警察関係者について詳しく書くことはいいのだか、全体の半分くらいまでは短い章ごとに主人公が変わる書き方をしていて、且つ本筋とは全く関係のないところまで紹介されるので非常に読みづらい。加えて騎馬警察の歴史、カナダの歴史・伝説、文化人類学的な民族の説明、サイコパスのプリファイリング等々やたら長い説明を随所に挿入しているので、読んでいるうちに何を読んでいるのか全く困惑する。600ページ以上あるにも関わらず話はダラダラと脈絡がわからないまま延々と続き、話がやっと1つになって展開が速くなるのは半分を大幅に過ぎてから。
当然のことながら登場人物の誰一人として感情移入できようもなく、斜め読みをしてしまった。斜め読みをするとうさんくさい人物たちはわかってしまうので、最後の大ドンデン返しも特に期待したほど劇的ではない。無駄な部分を省けばかなり中味の薄い小説で、内容もかなり陳腐な気がした。
よくこんな小説が翻訳されたものだとかなり呆れた。
