野沢 尚
1960年、愛知県生まれ。日本大学芸術学部卒。83年、『V.マドンナ大戦争』の脚本により城戸賞準入賞。99年、テレビ脚本『結婚前夜』『眠れる森』で向田邦子賞受賞。小説家としては97年、『破線のマリス』で江戸川乱歩賞を受賞し本格デビュー。同年、『恋愛時代』で島清恋愛文学賞、2001年、『深紅』で吉川英治文学新人賞を受賞。2004年、急逝(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

こっちの世界では2006年のＷ杯の後、中田英寿が引退して、2007年中村俊輔がチャンピオンズリーグでマンＵから2発フリーキックを決めて、2008年日本代表は日替わり弁当のようにメンバーがコロコロ変わり、興味がどんどん薄れています。

こんな時こそリュウジが必要だったんじゃないんですか？

龍時シリーズの最後となってしまったこの作品。
アテネオリンピックで代表に選ばれ、奮闘する龍時と代表監督の平義が話の中心として進んでいく。
この作品はオリンピック以前に書かれたため選出されている日本人選手も出場国も作者の考えで決定されている。
オリンピックということもあり今回の作品は試合のシーンがとても長いが決して飽きることなく読むことができどんどんと引き込まれていく。
そして作中に出てくる｢我が魂よ不死を求むことなかれ。ただ可能の限界を汲みつくせ｣という言葉はとても印象的です。

あとがきには次のシーズンはリュウジとケガとの戦いを書きたいと語っていた野沢氏の自殺は正直納得がいかないが、リュウジは永遠に生き続けてほしい。

シリーズ第三作
アテネオリンピックが舞台です。現実の結果が本作のようだったら良かったのですが。

前二作同様、サッカー場面は非常に軽快で切れ味鋭い描写になっています。主人公はずいぶん大人になった印象を受けます。サッカー以外への内面の葛藤を振り切れた感じがします。主人公の内面へ向かう描写が、1作目、2作目と比べて「軽く」感じられるようになりました。
「そんなに生き急がなくても」という切迫感がやわらかくなっています。その後の著者の死を思うと矛盾する感じがするのですが。逆に次期代表監督となるであろうオリンピック代表監督夫妻の複雑な背景描写にずいぶん筆を割いています。この部分はずいぶん重い印象を受けます。おそらくこの監督と共に代表に入って、監督と共に主人公も成長していくという今後の展開が予想できるのですが...。

このシリーズとしては著者の遺稿となってしまったわけですが、成長の物語としては中途半端でも、本作は本作で完結できるクオリティを持っています。'04アテネ、'06ドイツと悔しい思いをしたサッカーファンは爽快な気分になれるのではないでしょうか？
