「慟哭」はもちろん、貫井氏作品にはほとんど目を通していますが、本作品は信仰・キリスト教を軸においていてこれまでのスリラー・ミステリ系とはだいぶ異なる印象。主人公を介して語られる貫井氏の宗教観、単行本刊行時から賞賛の声と同時に「重すぎる」という評もありました。が、いま読み返してもその巧妙なプロットは、オビの文句「最高傑作」「一大叙事詩」が決して誇張に思えない出来。筆致のテンポも見事で一気に読ませますが、確かに「重みがある」テーマであることも事実なので、貫井作品のラインナップにあった軽いスリラーのノリを求める方には不向きかも。襟を正して読みたい一冊。

謎の男朝倉暁生との出会いをきっかけに、牧師の息子として生まれた主人公早乙女輝が、神の救いとは何なのかについて悩み、神の声を聞こうとするあまり、過激な信仰に心酔していくのがこの話の序盤です。１２歳の小僧にあんな思考力があるのか？ってのはあえてつっこまないことにします。


この本は、私が読んだ９作品目の貫井作品でした。小説はあまり読まない私ですが、さすがに８作品も読んでいれば、貫井作品に仕掛けられた「トリック」を見破れるだけの警戒心はついていたようです。詳しくはここには書きませんが、「トリック」に関しては概ね私が予想できたものでした。

読後の感想は、「作中には様々な事件が登場するのに、そうやって登場した伏線がいくつか回収されないまま、謎や単なる事件として終わってるものが多いな」ということでした。

しかし、そんな私の読後の感想が浅はかなものであると思わせてくれるのがあの解説！！

鷹城さんの解説を読んで、トリックばかりに注意を払いすぎて作品全体のテーマである「キリスト教（プロテスタント）における“救い”について」に関しては、あまり深く考えずに読み飛ばしてしまっていたことを少し悔やみました。
とはいえ、あの素晴らしい解説とあわせて評価すれば、作品自体のこの読後の満足感は☆５つです！

この作品は、たとえキリスト教の信者の方でなくとも「信仰」と「救い」に関して、何らかのアイデアを与えてくれる作品だと思います。そういった意味では登場人物たちの台詞１つ１つを深く考え、追求ながら、読み進めていかれるとより一層奥深い作品になると思います。信者の方にとっては非常に胸糞悪い作品かもしれませんが…

小説としても問題提起としてもとても興味深く読みました。

キリスト教と神の沈黙を題材に、噂に敏感な田舎町の小さな教会の牧師一家を主人公として、人が救いを求める姿がえぐるような筆致で描かれています。主なテーマが神と救いにつきるので、万人受けするかどうかは別にして、キリスト教の知識があまりなくても、登場人物の口から語られる世界観から登場人物の心情を理解できます。ただ出てくる信者は特殊な設定で、シンクロできる生身に近い存在とはあまりいえないかもしれませんが、裏のテーマとして練り込まれた田舎の町の人間関係はさすがという感じがします。

読んで満足感はありましたが、「慟哭」ほどのインパクトはありませんでした。また、キリスト教とか神とかが全面的に出すぎている感も。
今後の作品に期待です。
