いっぷうかわったおじいさんと主人公の僕、母とのヒューマン・ドラマ。
この作者がよく題材にする子どもと老人、そして「死」を絡めた物語。
この作品も悪くはないが、「夏の庭」「ポプラの秋」のほうが作品としては上か。
前２作品ほどの力はないように感じた。
読んでいないようだったらそちらもオススメする。

大好きな作家さんが自分のふるさと(小倉)を舞台にした作品を
発表するなんて・・・もうそれだけで感激です。

でも本編は西日の町よりポプラの秋のほうが好きです。ごめんなさい。
私が女性だからかもしれませんが。

湯本さんの後書きを読んで、
休みのたびに東京(祖母宅)から小倉まで
新幹線を利用していた子供時代を思い出しました。
時が止まり続ける空間・・・まさにその通りでした。

「僕」の中で様々な時間が交錯していく。しかし、紛らわしいことや、不可解さはない。
それは一本の物語となって、響いてきた。
「僕」の中で生きる母やてこじいは、読む側の気持ちを揺れ動かすが、とても静かで、懐かしい。セピア色の町に輝く、夕陽みたいだ。
非常に巧い。美しくて、巧い。
「夏の庭」ほどの感動はないが、しっとりと味わい深く、温めてくれる。
