厳しいレヴューが多いようですが、僕としてはこういうライトエッセイも米原万里に多く書いてほしいと思う。「不実な美女・・」や「魔女の１ダース」などに比べると（米原万里のエッセイとしては）物足りないと感じる人もいるようだが、このレベルの内容でしかも読みやすい、という点は評価してよいのではないか。僕は、これは手抜きというよりは意図した結果だと思うし、このようにトーンが異なるものを書けるという点に逆に感心したのだけれど。最後の方に「ピオニール・キャンプの収穫」という短いエッセイがあります。非常に美しいエッセイで感動しました。

一気に読んでしまいました。ロシア語同時通訳を職業とする著者が、速いテンポと軽快な語りですすめるグローバルエッセイです。

同時通訳の現場で日々繰り広げられるアクシデントをぎりぎりのところでかわし、カラッとしている様子はロシアのイメージとはほど遠く、新鮮（笑）。常に外側から日本を見ているからこそ感じてしまう、オカシナ日本の歴史や文化。日本人おやじが大好きなダジャレを、いかに上手く盛り込んで通訳するかに命をかけちゃう（意味のわかんない笑いは疎外感を生んじゃうんです）通訳の苦労。かと思うと意外なところで一致してしまう、世界の壁さえ越える人類共通の笑いのツボ。などなど盛りだくさん。
明確なポリシーとアイデンティティを持つ著者だからこそ、そんなてんやわんやな毎日もスタイリッシュでかっこいい！

通訳という職業柄でしょう　言葉に対する感覚がとても面白い
それも　仕事上の具体的なエピソードと絡めてあるので　説得力があります
中には　職業とは関係のないテーマもありますが　それもほのぼのとしていて　全体に気負いなく読めます
抱腹絶倒というより　くすっ　あるいは　にやりと笑わせる感じです

攻撃的な世相批判ではなく　身近な体験に根ざした柔らかな物の見方が魅力のエッセイ集だと思います
