吉田修一といえば独特の浮遊感と、極端にいえば「で、何が言いたかったの?」というストーリーが特徴でしょ。それが…! 作者初期の作品「Water」は、甘酸っぱく、元気で明るくエロい、真っ直ぐ少年達の完璧青春小説なのです。キラキラも戸惑いも躍動感もあるし、当然!切なさと夏の終わりと大人の階段もある。ド直球!「ウォーターボーイズ」と「69」とドラマの「野ブタ。」足して割ったような最高のバカ男子モノ。グッとくるよ。そりゃこんな金字塔は、一生に一本しか書けないすよ。

表題作の「最後の息子」が大好きです。
通勤中に読んだのですがラストではしっかり電車内で涙を流しました。

吉田修一さんの描く完璧さからはほど遠い登場人物のおしつけることのないやさしさ、思いやりにいつも、心が打たれます。
一生懸命か、そうでないか、様々あったとしても社会を構成する人間として生きている人のさりげない誠実さにはやはりうれしくなります。

　表題作の主人公「ぼく」は、オカマの閻魔ちゃんのヒモ。「体調の良い病人」のような一見気ままな生活の中で、「ぼく」は自分の演じるべき役を模索している。そして同時に自らの努力を、苦笑いしながら眺めているのだ。

　収められた三篇の作品はどれも、映像的な印象。一人称の語り手は、自分自身の姿をも場面全体の情景の中で捉えるような、客観的な視点を持っていて、それが語りをクールなものにしている。三篇の作品すべての中心には身近な人の死が横たわり、主人公たちの生はいやおうなくその影響を受け歪められているのだが、語りのクールさゆえに、作品の味わいは陰惨なものではなく、軽やかで洒脱である。
　表題作で「ぼく」が、ビデオカメラを通して自らの映像化（客観視）を行っているのが象徴的だ。

著者の作品を色々読みながら、エッセンスの凝縮の仕方やキャラクター設定など他の作品よりも感度が高く、今尚この作品は秀逸だと思う。
