　歴史上の人物には「人間」が見えにくいのですが、司馬文学には必ずその時代背景の中で行動した「人間」が描かれています。この本には義経が弁慶と戦うシーンがありませんし、義経八艘飛びも出てきません。言い伝えの義経をイメージしていた方にとっては、物足りなさを感じるかもしれません。しかし、苦労して開墾した土地の所有権を保護する政策を打ち出し、土地の所有権に新たな価値観を見出す国家の誕生をいち早く感じ取っていた頼朝と、これを理解し得ない京都育ちの義経との間に生じた確執が描かれています。
　義経をとおして、安定した伝統の中で「血」を重んじてきた平家（京都）の終焉と、開墾で土地を得て生きてきた「実」を重んじる関東（鎌倉)の新国家誕生を描いた力作です。

本書の義経は、わたしたちがよく知っている義経の物語とはずいぶん、色合いが違う。

義経は、童話や時代劇では悲劇のヒーローのイメージが強く、弁慶との出逢い、静御前との恋など、数多くの有名なエピソードで彩られているが、本書ではそうした人口に膾炙したエピソードをほとんど取り上げない。なんと、頼朝の追討を受けて京を逃げ出し衣川で自害するまでは、たった３行である。これにはおどろいた。

もちろん、人間を書いている。人間の泣き笑いを描いている。だから史書ではなくて紛れもなく小説である。しかし、情緒の捕らえ方が普通のふうではない。個々の人間の行動や考え方、価値観は、時代を離れては存在しない、という観点から出発している。

この物語の時代は、公家の世から武士の世に、に大きな舵が切られた時代である。このあと、徳川の世が終わるまで実に７００年間、武士の世が続く。そういう大きな時代の転換があった。

だから、この物語は人間を描いてはいるが、その視点は、人間からみたものではなく、いわば時代がみた人間、である。

義経と頼朝を、時代からみると、また、この兄弟の悲劇への理解が深まる。義経は天才的な戦略家だったが、しかし、時代からみれば、ただの愚か者であった。頼朝は、この悍馬の如く荒れ狂う時代にしがみつき、必死で乗り切って武家の世を開いたが、義経は己が愚かさのために振り落とされてしまった。頼朝が義経と初めて対面したときの喜びは本物だったろう。しかし、頼朝には落馬しそうな義経を助けあげるだけの余裕がなかった。司馬はそういっているように思える。

頼朝が時代を乗りこなし、義経が振り落とされたことが決まったあと、それ以上の物語は単なる惰性でしかない。だから、３行だったのかも知れない。

ともあれ、司馬の書く義経は、やはり、司馬版としかいいようのない義経であった。
いつの世も、時代の気分から、人は逃れられるものではないのであろう。

これはなかなか面白かった。

義経が偏屈なまでに、そして性善説かつブラコン
ぶりが見事にかきあげらています。

さらに、なぜ義経は時代の舞台から消えることに
なったのか？源頼朝はなぜ大きな戦の大将をして
いないのに覇を手にいれることができたのかが
司馬さん一流の踊るような文章で描かれています。
