松陰が落命し（169頁）、以後高杉晋作の出番となる一巻。様々な登場人物のパーソナリティーも含め、読む者の眼前に彼らを浮かばせる描写力や人間分析力は、やはりさすが。

政治史的な背景に関する指摘、就中（１）嘉永6（1853）年のペリー来航による「侮幕」（139頁）ムードの発生がいわば全てのトリガーとなり倒幕へと繋がっていったことや（２）攘夷論のあの高まりは、事の当否を超えた倒幕の「理論付け」如何の問題であったこと（「開国＝常識」ではなく、実現不可能な「攘夷＝狂気」が革命エネルギー放出のための口実として必要であったこと（269頁、294頁））、（３）開港（開市場）による利益は、一大名による私権政府に過ぎない徳川幕府が独占する構図であったこと（269頁、303頁）などの視点は、大変勉強になった。

この他、よく云われる革命家群像の類型化（予言者→行動家→処理家、162頁）の議論もためになる。

第二巻にて、松陰の死というかたちで、主人公が晋作へと移り変わります・・・。
幕末というと、坂本竜馬や新撰組といった面々が、とかく取り上げられがちですが、この動乱期に大きな仕事を成し遂げたのは、やはり長州藩出身の志士達ではないでしょうか？
彼等の多くは、明治維新を迎える前に、その命を散らして逝きます。

歴史の大きな節目に立ち合えなかった、真の歴史の立て役者・・・。
そんな長州の若き志士達の物語りをぜひとも多くの人に読んでもらいたいです。

　吉田松陰と高杉晋作の邂逅。
　松陰が死罪となる。
　高杉晋作が「倒幕」を志す。
といったことが描かれています。

　中で語られている長井雅楽の航海遠略策を読み、
「この時代でもここまで見通せる人物がいたのだ」
と驚きました。
　この策の正当性が時代に受け入れられなかったのがとても悔しいです。
