『旅の理不尽』では、一介の素敵なサラリーマンであった宮田珠己氏は会社を辞めて旅に出る。

「会社を辞めて旅に出た」なんていう本は、それこそ掃いて捨てるほどある。そんな本のひとつである本書が、類書と明らかに異彩を放ち、読者を引きつけて止まない理由は、宮田珠己氏の著書に共通してみられるギャグ満載の異様な文体の他に、彼の「変なもの」に対する異常なまでの好奇心、観察眼、およびお気軽な批評精神にあると思う。

ここに「変なもの」とは、著者の言うところの「四次元密度の濃い」ものであり、それは東南アジアの土着の宗教や新興宗教の施設に見られる、訳の分からないセメント像群であったり、迷路であったり、ベトナム式盆栽であったり、ミャンマーの奇祭であったりする。

もともとこの旅は、サラリーマン時代には出来なかった陸路での国境越えに主眼がおかれていたようだが、旅の過程で著者の興味はどんどん「変なもの」へ引きつけられ、当初の目的はどうでも良くなり、「変なもの」を求めて大暴走してしまうのである。

「変なもの」の多くは某有名ガイドブックにも載っていない、地元の人のための「変なもの」であり、同じような地域を旅した人も知らないような、言ってしまえば「どうでもいい」ようなものばかりである。
それらを写真を多数掲載し、説明し、解説し、批評する。しかし「変なもの」は想像を絶する「変さ」で著者を、はっきり言って、挑発している！

要するに、暴走する「変なもの」と変な奴「宮田珠己」の対決の書である。

しかしまぁ、１０年も勤めた会社を辞め、経歴も何もかも棒に振って、よくこんな下らないことができるものだ。

宮田珠己さん、ごくごく最近知ったんですけど、もの凄く面白いですね。この軽妙な語り口、クセになります。
通勤時、電車の中で読んでたんですが、周りの人には確実に怪しい奴だと思われてるはずです。だって肩揺すりながら笑ってしまいました。

台湾や香港の極彩色の仏像やオブジェは確かに気になっていたけれども
（せっかくの）長い旅行のテーマを変な物を見ることに特化しようと考える筆者の感覚が面白いと思います
文章はかなり漫画的で、極彩色で文章が印刷されているかのような気になります
