第5回松本清張賞受賞作の本作品は、D県警を舞台にした「陰の季節」「地の声」「黒い線」「鞄」の4作品から構成されています。2002年版このミスで2位になった「動機」03版このミス・文春2002年で1位を獲得した「半落ち」に勝るとも劣らないできばえで、この2作を気に入った方々には是非お勧めできます。作者の自己分析による「ミステリ度」は「陰の季節」4・「動機」3.5・「半落ち」3・「深追い」4ということです。ご参考まで。

Ｄ県警を舞台にした短編集。
警察のどちらかといえば、デスクワーカに光を当てた話。
他の短編で主役だった登場人物が、
他の短編で脇役として登場する、といった仕掛けがあり、
短編集でありながら、１冊の小説としても楽しめる。
また、この仕掛けによって、脇役登場の部分でも
登場人物の県警での位置などを知ることができ、
また始めから、読み返したくなる。

設定のせいか、地味なのだけれど、ものすごく面白い！
登場人物たちを入れている箱が、
警察という特殊な世界であることが売りではない。
丁寧に、人間の心理を描いてある。
ここが、本書の『うまみ』そのものであり、
「全く新しい警察小説」を成功させた部分だと思う。

ちなみに本書は、ドラマ化された『顔 FACE』のシリーズ第一弾。
『顔』の主人公・平野瑞穂が主人公の『黒い線』収録。

「完璧なムラ社会」警察組織の生々しい息遣いが聞こえてくるような一冊です。

警務部秘書課で「議会対策」にあたる男の話（「鞄」）など、
「そんな職務あるの？」と、目新しさに胸踊り、組織の詳らかな描写に心を掴まれます。
が、横山氏の凄いところは、そうやって組織というシステムを描いた上で、
そこに生きる人間の揺らぐ心や言いようのない熱さを感じさせるところではないでしょうか。
短編が四作収められていますが、主人公は全て異なります。
しかし、彼らの所属はすべてＤ県警。
つまり、さっきの作品で主人公だった人物が、
次の短編では脇役としてほんのちょっと顔を出したりするのです。
その、さりげない人生の交錯の仕方も、またたまりません。

警察という組織の匂いを作品の隅々にまで染みこませているおかげで、
かえって「人間」を感じさせる、お奨めの一冊です。
