批評家だとか評論家が書く文章は回りくどくて難解なものが多い。簡単な言葉で済むものもわざと難しくしているんじゃないのか、と思ったりする時もある。そして、その分野に詳しい人達だけしか相手にしていないような人も多い。勿論、そういった評論家達も必要だが、それだけでは自分も含めた一般人は困るし楽しめない。著者は一般人も楽しみながら読むことができる数少ない評論家だろう。

難解な言葉は使わない、例えの上手さ（評論家としては大事な資質だと思う）とおかしさ、斬新な切り口、そして何より、駄目な作品を深刻ぶってけなすのではなく笑い飛ばしてしまう余裕がいい。

ここに収められた書評の中には、著者自身が記しているように精通していない分野もある。その分野に精通している人には物足りなさや不満を感じたりするのかもしれない。しかし、これは「踊る読者」としての著者が、そういう人達のためではなく、「躍る読者」のために書いた書評である。そこを勘違いしてはいけないと思う。

ちょっと古い作品だが、その面白さに変わりはない。時が経過することで、それらの本（現象）がどうなったかがわかり、発表当時より楽しめたものもあったくらいである。

とっかかりこそ本であるが、彼女の批判の目は本の後ろにある社会や人間に鋭く向けられている。「ごくごく一般的な、そんじょそこらの読者代表」だなんてご謙遜。同じ本を読まされて、ぼんやりしたふつうの読み手はもちろん、そこそこの書評屋・教養屋にだって、そこまで斬ることはできない。そして、ひとたび読みはじめるともうとまらない「カッパえびせん」的筆力。すでに十年前の話題ながら、本にまとめるとき、さらに文庫化にあたって、最新のコメントを加筆しているので充分に楽しめます。

　この本を「おもしろい」というのは当たっておりません。ここはひとつ「おもしれえー」といってもらいましょう。斎藤美奈子の得意技は、このはしたなさであります。はしたない物言いで挑発し、相手の頭に血がのぼったところで、フックだジャブだと繰り出して、自分のコーナーにひっぱっていくという芸風、じゃなかった戦法。瀬戸内寂聴の源氏物語に対して、貫禄と誉めたあとで「厚顔無恥とはいわないでおきます」などと厭味の一発を放つあたり、弱腰の男の批評家ではこうはいきません。

　バカでは書けない。しかしバカを装ったお利口ぶりは嫌らしい。だからといって利口にあぐらをかくほど傲慢ではない。このあたりの逡巡をけっとばしてできたのが、彼女独特のデスマス体の文体です。

「汝、驚くなかれ。いまどきの聖書の日本語訳」「死ぬまでやってなさい。全共闘二十五年目の同窓会」「〈すわ震災〉のチャンスを即興芸で語った人たち」「知的ブームの底にあるのは知的大衆のスケベ根性だ」「身内の自慢話が〈だれも悪くいわない本〉に化ける条件」・・なかなかみごとな先制パンチではありませんか。

　もっとも読者の反響が大きかったのが「近代史音痴の国で起こったお笑い歴史教科書論争」だったそうですが、両陣営をうまく揶揄してみせたものの、だからあんたはどうなんだ、というのが大方の読者のつっこみでありましょう。彼女、この本の中身と同じくらい口も達者なら、日本のマスコミがほおっておくはずはない。「朝まで生テレビ」でもニュースキャスターでも、お呼びがかかるはずですが・・。そのあたりどうなの？

　これまで対象をワラウという余裕のない批評が多すぎました。裸の王様を裸だ、と言ってのける子供の天真爛漫さは批評ではありません。いかに裸であるか、そのみっともなさを言うところに彼女の真骨頂があります。小林秀雄賞をもらったりしてどうぞワライの感度が鈍らないようにネ。
