第一次世界大戦の最中、特殊な「感覚」を持つジェルジュの
半生を描いた長編『天使』の姉妹編で、こちらは短編集になっています。

自分は『天使』⇒『雲雀』の順で読みましたが、相変わらず可能な限り
説明文を省いていて、読者に対してシビアな文体です。
それも良く練られたプロットだからこそ可能なことでしょうね、
無駄を省かれた物語の洗練度は並外れています。一文の密度がとても濃く、
斜め読みはとても無理なので、噛みしめるように読み進めたのですが、
それがすごく心地よいのです(笑)
文章を噛みしめて物語の世界に沈み、ラストに辿り着くと、
「ああ、久々に読書をしたなあ。。。」という幸せな気分になりました。

ジェルジュの異能など、設定部分はライトノベルのそれに近いのですが、
文体やプロットは間違ってもラノベではなく、純文学です。
ジャンル分けが難しく、そもそもその意味もないかもしれませんが、
読後感だけで言うなら、アーシュラ・K・ル=グヴィンの『闇の左手』
『所有せざる人々』などのSF作品を読んだ時の感覚に近いです。
どれも読んだ後は、すごく満足できました。

こういう、ジャンル小説×純文学みたいな作品をもっと評価する土壌が
日本にあればいいのになあと思います。

たしかに「天使」の続編なのだが、こちらの方がとても楽しく読める。作者が本当に書きたかったのは、こっちの枝葉の話の方、というか、双方が３日間寝込むような過激な仕事の引き継ぎとか、最後のカーチェイスの場面とか、そっちだったのではないかと思えてしまう。「天使」がちょいと腑に落ちなかった方、ぜひ読むべし。個人的には顧問官殿のファンでした（笑）。

「感覚」（と言えばよいのか？）能力を持つジョルジュの物語 「天使」の外伝、後日譚とも言うべき短編集です。
「天使」ではほとんど触れられなかったジョルジュの出生に関わる実の父母の話や
第一次世界大戦後、すなわちハプスブルグ家瓦解後のジョルジュの話がいくつかあったり
楽しめました。
前作の「天使」を読んでいないと楽しめませんが、「天使」を楽しんで読めた人にはお勧めです。
登場人物たちも相変わらずそれぞれ特長的で、淡々とした文体でつづられる
第1次大戦前後のヨーロッパの雰囲気に浸されてしまいます。
「雲雀」を呼んだ後に「天使」を読むといろいろ腑に落ちて、2度おいしいです。
