大掛かりな舞台背景を手際よく説明していく職人技、
粉飾を廃し、抑制の効いた文体、
多面的な人物設計、薫り高い時代描写
暗殺の陰謀に加担していくことそのものが
ミステリーとして成立している逆転の発想、
どれをとっても一級品である。

気軽に手に取れるエンターテイメント作品ではないが、
安易な時代物やミステリーに飽き飽きした読者にとって
この水準の作品が日本語で読めることは幸せである。

佐藤亜紀大好きです。このひとの小説があれば、もういいや。と思えるほどに好き。特にこの作品は素直に萌えられることでは随一です。
公爵のビスコンティ的にあざやかな人物造形に目を奪われますが、やっぱり主役はアントワーヌ。もう、噛めば噛むほどいい男なのである。工兵で剣の名手でなにがあっても文句を言わない情深い美男子ですもの。いいなあ。お得意の小役人キャラも実に執拗に絡んで味わい深い。反面マドンナであるはずのクリスティアーネのいさぎいいほどの書き割り感は爽快です。この女、まったく生きてない。
佐藤亜紀はキャラクターのネーミングが抜群に巧い。殊に公爵のフルネームは口のなかで転がして楽しみたいほど素敵である。
アウステルリッツ、フェンシング、ヴァイオリン、そしてオペラ。これだけ搭載されていて満足できないはずがあろうか。
読中の陶酔そして読後の恍惚たるやほとんど麻薬。

あまり解説的な描写がなく、話の流れも難しいので、最初は取っつきにくかったのですが、読み進めるごとに、魅力的な人物が次々に登場、展開も劇的に進んでいき、目が離せなくなりました。

フランス軍の工兵士官として、陰謀に巻き込まれていく主人公のパスキ大尉は、処世術が常識人ぽいけど、退廃的な恋に身を連ねたり、ヤレヤレと思いながらどんどん陰謀に首をつっこむところが共感を得ます。 他の登場人物も、いちいち魅力的です。

彼を翻弄する破滅的なウストリツキ公爵には、底知れないカリスマを感じ、兄に負い目を負いつつ軍人として活躍する弟の大佐や、魅力的でちょっと投げやりだけど、実はスマートな大佐の妻も、主人公との関わりで、それぞれの持ち味を出します。それ以外にも、秘密警察の人や、フランス軍の人たちも、それぞれよくかき分けられていて、混沌とした国際情勢を生き抜く人たちの物語を感じさせてくれます。
