とっても損してる作品です。
本の帯のキャッチコピーは安いし、知名度を上げた映画も原作を下回ってます。おまけに、上巻を読んだだけではこの作品のよさがさっぱりわかりません。

下巻になってはじめて、主人公吉村貫一郎の誠実さ、息子嘉一郎のひたむきさ、斎藤一の熱い魂がビカビカと輝きはじめます。絶対に上巻から下巻の「最後」まで読んでください。大野次郎右衛門がとどめの隠し玉を用意してます。

思い出しただけで泣けてしまうフレーズがこれでもかというくらい散りばめられてます。本当に泣けてしまう作品なので泣けるとしか言いようがありません。くれぐれも、上巻だけ読まないようお願いします。下巻だけでもダメよ♪

著者の作品は「蒼穹の昴」を読んで以来、暇を見つけては読み漁って来ましたが、久々に浅田節に泣かされました。それにしても浅田氏の作風の多彩さにはいつも驚かされます。血なまぐさい殺戮集団である新撰組にあって、貫一郎の家族への愛、強さ、やさしさは表面的には隊士の笑いものですが、奥深く一人ひとりの心に刻まれていきます。貫一郎とともに心にせつなく残るのは貫一郎の息子、嘉一郎のひたむきな、それはひたむきな父への想いです。泣けます。

上巻から一気に読みきってしまいました。
涙が止まらず、しばらく頭の中で、南部なまりの彼の言葉が回っています。
彼の長男の嘉一郎もまた泣かせます。

2003年には映画化されるそうなのでそちらも楽しみです。
