この短編集のレビューは難しいぞ、というのが最初の印象。　江戸時代の市井ものは数多く読んできたのですが、「感動の味わいが違う」と思う。　 どこが違うのかと尋ねられても、答えられない。 苦し紛れに、本文中の言葉を借りるなら
「あれはねえ・・・夢をみていたんだろうよ」
「さて、なるようにしかなりません」

投げやりではなく、しっかりと地に足のついた人物の台詞が軽妙だから面白い。 独特の宇江佐ワールドと、実在した歴史人物とが融合する作品もまた興味深い。　女性ならではの優しく口当たりのよい作品と、作家の新たな関心時への開拓作品が織り交ざった、分岐点とも呼べる短編集でした。

　昔、藤沢周平の短編にぞっこんだったことがあった。宇江佐真理の七つの短編は、あのすぐれた世話物時代小説に特有の深く濃く香り立つ匂いや、滋味深くて爽快な味わいを久しぶりに思い出させてくれた。でも、これは当たり前のことだけれど、そこにはくっきりと藤沢節とは違う宇江佐真理の個性が刻まれていて、それは中村彰彦さんが「解説」で紹介している「女性ならではの繊細さ」という評言が言い当てようとしているものと同質であるように思う。たとえば仙台の女剣士・知佐が、騙されて同居することとなった北町奉行所同心・鶴見俵四郎宅で五歳になる松之丞との交情を深め、やがて俵四郎との真剣勝負を経てその後添いとなることを受け入れる一部始終を丹念に淡々と綴った表題作「余寒の雪」などは、読み終えて気持ちが清々しくなる絶品で、その丁寧な筆運びのうちに、情感の襞に分け入りながらもこれをそっと事物、言動に託して描写する「繊細さ」がいかんなく発揮されている。

武士から町人まで、さまざまな男女の心を描く７編からなる短編集です。
連作じゃない短編集すがいずれも歯切れよく読めるものばかりです。

作者の筆力の確かさが覗える１冊ですが、特に良かった２編を紹介します。

「梅匂う」

　助松は小間物屋　千手屋を営んでいて、妻には先立たれていた。ある日から見せ物小屋の舞台に上がる大女の大滝太夫に入れ込んでしまう・・・
　最後の方で、大滝が戻って来るシーンがとても印象的です。

「余寒の雪」

　知佐は剣術に励みすぎていて、縁談も遠ざかっていたが、親戚の提案で江戸で祝言を上げさせられる手立てになっていた。本人は相手の方に子供がいることに驚き・・・
　松之丞が熱を出した時、知佐が看病して心が通じ合う所がなんともいえません。
