人間と人間ではない生き物の情交を描いた八つの短編集。

全編に人間ではない生き物が登場して、しかも彼等が人間と普通に会話しているのに違和感がない世界。それは人間側の日常描写やセリフ回しがあくまでというか断固として現実的に進められるから可能だったのであろう。なので、そこに現れる世界は理解できないものではなく、むしろ大いに理解可能なものである。だが、その変に現実的な世界は、人間ではない彼等の存在によって、どこかやはり確実に揺らいでいる。

こんな不思議な世界は、作者の独特で意識的な描写（例えば「ぐにゃぐにゃ」「つやつや」「くるくる」「おんおん」などの擬態(声)語を繰り返し使ったり、年上の相手を主人公に「正太」と呼び捨てにさせたり「先祖」と単なる名詞で呼ばせたりする）によって、より印象的なものに仕立て上げられている。作者の日本語のつむぎ方は見事としかいいようがない。是非、この日本語マジックを味わってください。

川上弘美は、現代においてきわめて作家らしい作家であると思われるが、そしてその本領とでもいうべき「業」というか「おそろしさ」は、目下『文学界』に連載中の『真鶴』に明らかであるが、その発端はこの『龍宮』、なかでも「北斎」一篇に胚胎していたように思われてならない。言語芸術ならではの「異形のものども」が繰り広げる、少ししかずれていないにもかかわらずリアリズムや日常感覚には決して還元されることのない、「人間」を相対化することで浮かび上がる物語世界は、逆説的に「人間」を鮮やかなまでに抉り出し・描き出してみせる。「北斎」は、川上弘美が男を書き、最後まで蛸なのか人間なのかわからない存在が、その存在に引きつけられる男を通じて、文字通り生々しいまでの「異形さ」でもって眼前に浮かんでくるようなのだ。まさに、作家川上弘美は、ここから新たな出発を遂げるだろう。

川上弘美さんの小説はどちらかと言えば抽象的である。それ故、理解し難い。だからと言って決して嫌いではない。むしろ好きである。私は川上さんの小説をこれまで好んで読んできた。本書も迷わず購入し、読んでみた。幻想譚を集めた短編集である。こういう類の話は苦手である。しかし不思議とさらさら読めた。日常に潜む異様な世界を川上さんは淡々とした筆致で描き出す。日常から非日常へ。非日常から日常へ。その揺らぎが絶妙のさじ加減である。それが実に心地よい。だから私は川上さんの小説が好きなのだと思った。
