何年か前に、NHKの大河ドラマで北条時宗をやったとき、後半の方で時宗の側近の平頼綱（たしか北村一輝が演じていた）とほとんど最後に残った御家人安達泰盛（たしか柳葉敏郎が演じていた）の争いがヒートアップしたところで、時宗が死に、結末までは描かれませんでした。その後の両者がどうなったか、成り上がり者の平頼綱はどういう最後を迎えるか関心のある人は、「異形の寵児」を是非読んでみて下さい。それにしても、鎌倉時代は狭い都市の中で権力争いが繰り返された、血なまぐさい時代だったんですね。重苦しい話ですが、鎌倉時代後半という意外と知られていない時代に着目した作者に拍手したいと思います。

　前後する平安時代や室町時代と比べて、鎌倉時代の150年間というのはたいへん短く感じられますが、それがいかに支配階層にとって緊張を強いられた生存競争の厳しい時代であったかを、作者は現代の我々の前に再現してみせてくれます。
　天下人でさえ枕を高くして眠ることができなかった時代だったことは、源氏将軍達の天寿を全うし得なかった生涯で広く知られるところですが、その後を継いだ北条得宗家も、時頼、時宗、貞時･･･そろいも揃って有能にして短命でした。また北条一族はもとより有力武家からは、人材がこれでもかこれでもかとばかりに輩出しました。内憂外患の諺のとおりに苛烈な政権闘争は、為政者の質を高めずにはおかないのでしょうが、同時に生命の灯をも削っていったのでしょう。

普段は短編小説を読まないのですが、ぐいぐい引き込まれてしまいました。登場人物が、皆生きています。源頼家、平頼綱、北条高時と、鎌倉時代の流れを感じることができるのも良いところ。「鎌倉」とは一体何だったのか、もっと知りたくなる一冊です。
