又吉栄喜の芥川賞受賞作品。沖縄の場末のスナックに豚が闖入し、従業員の女のひとりが魂（まぶい）を落とす。つまり今日風に言えば失神をする。その珍事ひとつをとってみてもいかにも沖縄的おおらかさを感じさせるが、その厄落としのために御嶽に向かう過程で繰り広げられる物語のすべてが、どこか人間くさいおかしみを内包しており、肩の力が抜けてゆく。登場人物の女たちはみな心の傷を負いながらも、あっけらかんとたくましく、そして南の光そのもののように生命力にあふれている。爽やかな読後感が残る作品。
ただし文体は「妙に静かに」「妙に年寄りっぽく」「妙に潤んでいた」あるいは「変にはっきりと聞こえた」「変に青白かった」「変にざわめいている」等の語句が頻出するなど、もう少し精錬して欲しかった。芥川賞選考委員の方々も、登場人物たちのオプティミストぶりと沖縄土着のおおらかさに、ものの見事に飲み込まれていったということだろうか。むろんそれも作品の力と言えなくもないが。

『豚の報い』というタイトル、まずインパクトありますね。
物語の舞台は沖縄。だからというわけでもないでしょうが、味は濃いです。表紙のイラストも濃いですね。たとえるなら沖縄銘菓ちんすこうみたいなもんでしょうか？
前半、三分の一くらいでしょうか、文章が読み難いです。中盤以降は、読書側が慣れるのか文章がすっきりしているのか……

話の展開も（特に前半）、まさにユタ（霊能者）のお告げのような、支離滅裂のような、ちゃんと意味が通っているような……よく分からなさが充満しています。
四人の登場人物（というより三人の女）は豚の闖入にタマゲて、豚を食べて散々な目に遭い、最後には楽天的な気分になれたことを豚のおかげと認識します。

豚は悪魔であり、また神でもある動物です。人間もまた豚です。奔放に騒ぎ貪欲に食べまくる三人の女達の姿は、まさに豚舎そのものではないでしょうか？　そういう意味では、宮崎アニメと通じるものもありますね。

昭和の初めに書かれたような印象の作品。読んでいて、雰囲気は感じるのだが、そこに生々しい臭いは感じられない。この手の小説は、におい立つような情緒こそ必要だと思うのだが。
