すごく分厚いので、最初は読みとおせるか不安でしたが、お終いの方には「もう終わっちゃうのかー」と思うほど、登場人物たちと別れるのが寂しくなりました。読めば常夏気分だし、出てくるオバア達には大笑いさせられます。ほんとに沖縄（石垣？）のオバア達はこんな人々なのでしょうか。来年の夏は石垣島行き！を即決めました。

沖縄八重山諸島、石垣島の魅力がとっても色鮮やかに描かれている。97歳を迎えるファンキーなおばぁ、青くも瑞々しい島の高校生、琉球王朝の香りを残す美女の幽霊（？）、そしておちゃめで一途な豚の妖怪。彼／彼女らが中心となって、神々が宿る南の島を舞台に、初恋のせつなさ、祭りの興奮、豊穣の喜び、自然への畏怖、そして世代を越えて受け継がれる知恵への畏敬、などなど普段なかなか感じられなくった感情が、海や森に優しく包まれた石垣島の1年間の移り変わりとともに実に綺麗に、活き活きと、そして面白く物語られている。700ページを越える大作であるが、どんどんその物語の中に引き込まれていき、あっという間に「1年間」が終わってしまう。物語が終わってしまって残念だが、心には爽やかな海風が吹き渡り、人間と自然が持つ強く優しい気持ちが温かく感じられるような、そんな読後感でいっぱいになる。

分厚い本。長い長ーい話なんだけど読み終えるのがもったいなくて、それだけで泣けた。あのバカバカしさ、島のゆるーい空気がやがてラストに向かって加速していく疾走感、池上作品の魅力が余すところ無く味わえる物語です。まるで自分もそこにいるみたい。
