パターン的には、藤原作品の特徴をなぞった作品で、世界観はテロリストのパラソルとほぼ同じと言っていい。
でも、作品の完成度からみたら、こちらのてのひらの闇の方が格段に上だと思う。
主人公である、リストラ寸前のくたびれた中年男が胸の裡に内包する負の部分を、暗くなりすぎず、じめつかせず、スタイリッシュに描くことに成功している。
いい加減でくたびれていて、情けないのにカッコイイと喝采を贈りたくなる不思議な魅力が、主人公の男性にはある。
微妙に溜飲の下がらない、どちらかというと中途半端なラストが多い藤原作品にあって、この作品のラストシーンはすんなりと腑に落ちてくる感があった。
その意味でも、これは藤原作品の中でイチオシと思える作品になっていると感じた。

　会長が自社のコマーシャル用にと極秘で渡してくれた
「実録の八ミリのビデオテープ」
は実はCG合成されたものだった。
　宣伝部の課長堀江がそれを指摘し、コマーシャルには使えないことを告げた晩、会長は自殺する。
　会長の自殺の原因、ＣＧテープの作成された理由。
　それを知りたいと堀江が調べ始める。

　大会社の社内の様子や人間関係が
「もうすぐ退職する」
　堀江の視点から描かれていて、それぞれが、経営や宣伝などの仕事もこなしていく様子がリアルで面白いです。
　堀江自身があまり好きではなかった真田部長も愛嬌のある人物として最後に登場するなど、人物ひとりひとりに向けた視線のやさしさが、スマートな筋立てに奥行きを与えていて読みやすい小説になっています。
　長い小説ですが、どのページも面白くて一気に読みました。

くたびれた中年男のプライド、弱さや強さ、自らの意志を貫こうとする意地。
そんなのを書かせたらイオリンの右にでる作家なんていないのだ。
そんなイオリン作品が大好きなんだな。
ワープとか白髭みたいな空想ハードボイルド物も読みたかったな。
本作も中年男の話。能力はあるけど、上司の肩たたきに応じた中年男の話。
まぁ、とりあえず読め。
何でもいいから読め。
その価値がある。
