作者の書きぶりのせいか、非常に淡々とした速度で物語が進行していくような感じをうけました。それは戦争のシーンでも、恋に焦がれる場面でも、近親者の死を描く時も変わらなかったと思います。主人公の老成とともに物語もクライマックスになります。終盤近くになると、読んでいるものも穏やかな気持ちになれるような展開がもたらされます。読み終わったあとに、「いい人になりたい」というような気持ちになりました。通奏低音のように一定に響いていた、物語の“リズム”が本を閉じた後も胸に響きます。不思議な本でした。

辻文学の一番の魅力は、様々なテーマを通して人間という生き物の本質を探究する姿勢だと思う。この「白仏」はダイレクトに辻仁成の死生観を描いているのではないだろうか。生き物にとって避けることのできない「死」の本質を問う作品なわけで、高い評価を得るのも納得。「死」と「生」とは表裏一体。多くのファンの人生観を揺るがしたことと思う。　　辻仁成が三島文学や太宰文学の強い影響を受けていることは周知の事実だが、「白仏」は三島の「春の雪」を読んでいる気がして不思議な感覚に陥る。若い青年が性欲と恋心のバランスがとれずに暴走してしまうシーンなどは「春の雪」のまんまじゃないだろうか？そこに輪廻転生も加わると、不思議さは増すばかりだ。　　辻仁成のオリジナリティーこそ、この時代に必要なものなのに・・・。少し残念な気がする作品だった。

著者辻氏の母方の祖父「鉄砲屋今村豊」をモデルとした創作。
主人公の鉄砲屋稔が、兄や思いを寄せていた女性、友人、息子などとの死別、自身の戦争体験などを通じて、生とは何か、死とは何かを見つめ続けながら生きていく。
重い内容であるが、九州弁を使った辻氏のテンポの良い文章が読者に暗さを伝えない。
正直、辻氏がこれほどの本を書くことができると思っていなかったので、驚きと感銘を受けた。文句なしの５つ星である。
なお、本の題名の「白仏」は、福岡県大川市大野島「勝楽寺」の納骨堂に実在するそうである。機会があれば、訪れてみたいと思う。
