本書を読み進むにつれ、自分自身の俗物性が恥ずかしくなる。結木家は俗世の象徴の様な存在だった。歴史的にも大勢の社会的弱者の犠牲の上に成り立っている富と名声だ。ネパール人妻淑子の奇行により結木家のそれらが崩壊するのを輝和は止める事は出来たはずだ。しかしそれをしなかったのは、輝和自身も望んでいたからかも知れない。そして、本当に結木家が崩壊した後に輝和が得たものは絶望ではなく安堵だと思う。

しかしその後の展開は興味深い。無からの再出発だったが、淑子を中心に人の和が形成され、経済生活が自然に生まれた。しかも、そこそこの利益が出て潤うに至った。ここに人間の生の力強さと再生力を見る。それまでの淑子の神憑り的な奇行は崩壊と再生をもたらせた。この一連の淑子の行動の意味は釈然としないが、結果としてそういう事になる。そして淑子が失踪した事は彼女自身の役割を終えたという意味なのか？

そして輝和が淑子を追いかけて訪れたネパールの表の顔と裏の顔の落差の大きさには驚く。しかしネパールの山岳地帯の人々の生命力は殊の外強い。著者は日本的な物質文明を物差しにしてはならないと釘を刺す。

「神の座」と呼ばれる山を仰ぐ地で生まれた淑子の一連の行動は、もしかすると定められた事だったのかも知れない。ただし聖地は存在しなかった。

この文庫版で６４８ページ（！）を読み終えたとき、軽く腑に落ちたという「ストン」じゃなくて、「ズシン」という読後感に襲われました。確かな筆力だけがもたらす圧倒的な超重量感のある長篇です。

東京郊外、神奈川県との県境に近い村に代々土地持ちの名家として栄えてきた「結木家」。跡取り息子の輝和は、４０歳になって、まだ独身でした。４０回以上見合いをしたが、どうしても結婚できません。病身の父、既に高齢の母のため、何より「家」の存続のために、３８０万円も支払って、ネパールから嫁カルバナを迎えます。その嫁が、実は「生き神」だったというストーリーです。

読みどころは、ダメ男の輝和の人生が地に堕ちていくプロセスです。輝和の視点に近い三人称で書かれていますが、作者の筆は容赦ありません。父、母が相次いで死にますが、カルバナは「すべてを捨てろ」と輝和に迫ります。古くから受け継いだ家宝はもちろん、不動産は村の人々に寄付させられ、貯金は信者にばらまかれ、とうとう家まで差し押さえの末、放棄させられます。文字通り無一文になって、二人は手洗いさえない山小屋に暮らしはじめます……

篠田ファンタジーの特徴でもありますが、ディテイルの事実の積み重ねが怒涛の如くすばらしく、浮わついた感じはまったくしません。人生の豊かさとは何なのか、宗教の根源とは何なのか、大切なものに気づかせてくれる一冊です。

結木が、愛するカルバナを探しに、進む、進む。どれだけ離れていようとも、会いたければ会いにいけばいいじゃないか、という声がこだまするような筆勢に、勇気づけられる、衝撃を受ける作品です。
カルバナの行動が、違和感なく、まさに有り得るように感ずるのは、作者の強い思いに基づく筆力だと思うと、作者の魂の動きが伝わるようです。
かの地を訪れてみたいと、思わせます。
