桐野 夏生
1951年、金沢生まれ。成蹊大学法学部卒業。93年、「顔に降りかかる雨」で第39回江戸川乱歩賞受賞。99年、『柔らかな頬』で第121回直木賞、2003年、『グロテスク』で第31回泉鏡花文学賞、04年、『残虐記』で第17回柴田錬三郎賞、05年、『魂萌え!』で第5回婦人公論文芸賞受賞。1998年に日本推理作家協会賞を受賞した『OUT』で、2004年エドガー賞(Mystery Writers of America主催)の候補となった(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

題名だけが目に飛び込んできて「面白そうな小説だな」と取り寄せたらエッセイ集であった。作者のファンなら、その肉声が聴けて重宝するかも知れないが、「ＯＵＴ」という作品のファンなので、よくある身辺雑記の類だと閉口するなと危ぶまれたが、杞憂であった。掌編小説や書評・映画評も盛り込まれており、美味しそうな幕の内弁当のようにバラエティに富んでいる。読み進めていくうちに、何度も桐野夏生の小説に対する姿勢の貪欲な真摯さに瞠目した。本書を飾る末尾は表題作。無責任な匿名批評、ある評論家のその人間性まで扱き下ろすかのような批判に対する正当な反論が面々と綴られている。正直圧倒されてしまった。誹謗中傷などは「知らぬ存ぜぬ」で押し通したほうが精神的に楽なはずなのに、筆者は真っ向から立ち向かっていく。作家の小説に対する矜持を目の当たりにし、彼女の新作小説がさらに待ち遠しくなった。

なんだかおどろおどろしいタイトルですが、これは『ＯＵＴ』、『柔らかな頬』などで有名な作家、桐野夏生さんの作家デビュー１２年目にして初のエッセイ集です。

桐野さんというとその外見から「クールなミステリ界の女王」のイメージですが、ここに登場する彼女は「ヘアスタイルや服装を気に」したり、「ダイエットし」たり、「夕食の献立を考えて用意し」たり、「お嬢さんのお弁当を作った」りする、どこにでもいそうな仕事を持つ普通の女性であり主婦であり母親です。

しかしやはり「クールでいて熱い」物書き。最後のエッセイではそんな激しい彼女の一端がうかがえました。

　ここまで売れてもダメですか？　作品が映画化され、英訳され、文芸誌の表紙を飾り、電車の中吊り広告で一番大きな字で名前を書かれても、それでもまだダメですか？
　たった数人の批判があれば、何百の賞賛、何十万冊の売り上げがあっても、ここまで必死になるくらいに不安ですか？
　尽きぬ不満、底なしの欲望、これこそが彼女を推し進める原動力であるのかと。通俗もここまで推し進めると非凡へとステージ転換してしまうのかと。なんだか妙な感動がありました。

　美人なのに、なぜ、「おしゃれで、軽やかで、人生を知り尽くした良い女」を演じないのでしょう、この人は。
　嘘を演じなくても愛される自信があるせいかもしれませんが。

　そんなふうに思ってしまう、ぬっとりと濃お〜いエッセイです。
