　野中広務衆議院議員は、その同時代の青年と同じく復員兵として、戦後の人生を歩み始めた。それから差別とも闘いつつ、青年団活動を始めた。そして、その仲間達に推されて政治家の道を歩み始めた。京都府船井郡園部町議、園部町長を歴任した。京都府議では、革新府政と闘い、破った。そして、京都府副知事に就任した。野中氏は、副知事は一期限りで政界を引退するつもりであった。　しかし、思わぬ形で当時の衆議院京都２区補選に立候補し、５７歳という遅咲きで衆議院議員となる。その後、着実に力をつけて行く。自治大臣のときには、平成に入っての大難題「阪神・淡路大震災」、「オウム事件」と闘った。　その後の、内閣官房長官・自民党幹事長としての「闘い」は御承知のとおりである。これ、「野中広務の闘い」の書である。　政治家としての野中さんは「影の総理」、「キング・メーカー」だけではないことを知ってもらいたい。　政界引退を表明されたが、野中さんの新しい「闘い」の場に期待したい。

最新書の「老兵は死なず」を読んだあと本書を読んだので、その違いに驚いた。文体や読み易さは変わらない。しかし、中央政界の超現役であったにも関わらず、全て実名で同僚現役政治家や官僚をばっさばっさ批判していくのである。7年半後に出版された「老兵は死なず」では、政界を引退してから世に出されたにも関わらず、その批判の鋭さは無い。

著者の京都時代の記述も興味深かった。「革新政権」の実像がそこには記されている。村山内閣に関する、著者の分析はこれまで多くの評論家が語ってきた内容とは大きく異なり、興味深い。あれだけ共産党と敵対してきた著者が社会党とはうまくいったなんて、ほんとうに皮肉である。

この本は出版された当初はかなり売れてたと思いますが、やはり、中身は濃いです。私はこの人のリスクを伴った頑固一徹なところは信用するべきだろうと思います。今どき、こんなにも、一貫した主張をかませる人もいないだろうし、政治家は若けりゃいいってもんでもない。要はその人が本当に信用できるかどうかだと思います。キレイゴトくらい誰にでも言えますしね。とにかく、読んでみれば、信用できる人かどうかは分かると思うんですけど、でも、もう引退しちゃいましたね…
