北村 薫
昭和24(1949)年、埼玉県生れ。早稲田大学第一文学部卒業。大学時代はミステリ・クラブに所属。高校で教鞭を執りながら、昭和59年創元推理文庫版日本探偵小説全集を編集部と共同編集。平成元(1989)年、「空飛ぶ馬」でデビュー。平成3年、「夜の蝉」で日本推理作家協会賞、平成18年、「ニッポン硬貨の謎」で本格ミステリ大賞評論賞、平成21年「鷲と雪」で直木賞を受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

女子学習院の生徒のお嬢様を主人公として描かれるのは，1933 (昭和8) 年の東京の上流階級の世界．作者は厖大な資料を駆使して，今では完全に失われてしまった社会を昨日のことのように描き出す．この時代の空気は，ここに書かれた通り，物言えば唇寒し所か，生命の危険さえある漠然たるテロの恐怖に満ちたものであった．その空気が実感できるのが作者の手柄である．私はこの恐ろしい空気の中を生きただけに，作者に感謝したい．それと日本の古典文学，中華の漢文文書に対する教養は，この時代の初等中等教育の水準の高さの結果であることに注意したい．戦後の学制改革，教育改革は本質的に敗戦国の教育水準を下げる企みで，その結果が現在の嘆かわしい状態なのである．貴族階級が亡びるのはよいとしても，知的水準までが亡びるのは口惜しい．そういうことをこのお嬢様シリーズは痛感させてくれる．強く推薦．なお，会話の応答で，返す，という表現はこの時代ではあり得ない (お言葉を返すようですが，と言って反論する時に限る)．それから食材という言葉はなかった．強いて言えば素材か材料だろう．難点はその程度で，真に見上げた時代再現である．

ベッキーさんのたしなみが感じられる作品だと思う。
驕れる人の行動に対して，抑制のある行動が取れる人間。
こういう人が少なくなってしまったのだ。
「女のくせに」
昭和初期に使われる言葉，今でも平気で使われる言葉でもある。
自分を振り返ることができない人は，他人に対して何もできないはずなのだ。
ベッキーさんは，自分という人間の位置がよくわかっているのだろう。
