　清冽かつ理知的、明晰で的確な表現で知られる著者が、子供たちに向けて初めて書いた本。ということは、「子供向きの童話だろう」と思って読み始めると、それは嬉しい誤解だったことに気づく。舞台は南の小さな島。主人公の少年は、精霊が引き起こす不思議な事件に巻き込まれたり、友達のために胸がどきどきするような冒険をしたり。自然だけでなく、人の優しさも心も豊かな島で、少年（もしかしたら島一番の理性派。ここがやはりこの著書の主人公らしい。）と、島にやって来た不思議な人々に、やたらに暢気な島の住人たちとの出会いを綴った十の物語。読み始めてすぐ巧みなストーリーに引き込まれ、南国の花と果実の匂いの混じった濃厚な空気や高い山に吹く澄んだ透明な風、日向の乾いた太陽の匂いを深呼吸しながら読み進んでいくと、読み終わる頃には干したての布団にくるまっているように心がほかほかしている。　　日々の生活に心がちょっと疲れた時に効くビタミン剤。年に一度は読み返している。

　ティオはホテル経営者を父に持つ少年。周りには友達・島の人・観光客など大勢の人々がいて、その人たちとの関わりの中で多くの不思議な事件に遭遇する。ティオはそういう不思議なことに遭遇しながらゆっくり成長していくが、この不思議は島の人の日常生活を変えてしまうようなことはない、とても些細なものだ。
　美しい自然を持ち、だが一方で現代的な面も持つ著者独自の世界を舞台に、ティオが自分の周りで起きた１０の「不思議」を語る。それらの話は単に面白いだけではなく、時に寓話的な部分も感じられる、とても不思議なものだ。
　ただ最後の「エミリオの出発」だけは他と違い、これから広い世界へと旅立つ子供達への餞のような趣がある。世界観は『マシアス・ギリの失脚』に繋がる部分もあるが、最後の部分が違うだけで印象はだいぶ違う。

南の島。というだけで、私達の心に思い浮かぶものがある。
青い空･白い雲、そして見渡す限り美しい海･･･

そんな島に住んでいる少年ティオ。
彼を取り巻く日々の生活からこの本は書かれている短編集。

不思議な力を持つ「絵葉書｣は私もほしい！と思ったし、あまりここで紹介すると魅力が薄くなってしまいそうだから･･･
ちょっと心のつかれたとき、癒しを求めるとき、是非手に取ってください。
緑と青のさわやかな表装の文庫本。
さすが沖縄在住「池澤夏樹」さんの作品。
