1959年、東京生まれ。黒人の男との愛と破局を描いた「ベッドタイムアイズ」(文藝賞受賞)で衝撃的デビュー。87年、『ソウル・ミュージック・ラバーズ・オンリー』で第97回直木賞、89年、『風葬の教室』で平林たい子賞、91年、『トラッシュ』で女流文学賞、96年、『アニマル・ロジック』で泉鏡花文学賞、2001年、『A2Z』で読売文学賞、05年、『風味絶佳』で谷崎潤一郎賞を受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　この短編集の密度、完成度の高さは凄い！「珠玉」という言葉は宣伝の常套句だが、この短編集にこそふさわしい気がする。
　恋愛の究極的なかたちを様ざまに描いている。その筆致は「いま」とズレてないし、一方で古典のような風格、盤石さがある。山田詠美は、「日本」というかっこを外しても、いま現代文学の最前線にいるのではないか。この短編集だけを読んでも、決してこのクオリティーがフロックでないことがわかる。
　この短編小説共通するのは、男の主人公がみな、ネガティヴには「３Ｋ」と呼称される職業に従事していること。「あとがき」には「日頃から、肉体の技術をなりわいろする人々に敬意を払って来た。いつか私自身にも技術と呼べるものが身に付いたら、その人たちを描いてみたいと思っていた」とある。山田詠美が書く人物たちは３Ｋとか肉体労働者のステレオタイプなイメージを突き崩す。逆に、肉体という実存を持っていることが、恋愛を描く際に絵空事でない輪郭を与えている。「一緒に飯食って、セックスして、寝る」そのことが人間にとってどれだけ難しいことか。どれだけの人が、そのしあわせを分かち合える相手と遭遇できるというのだろう。
　しかし、どの短編も、どの人物も、唸ってしまうくらい面白い。それこそ狂気の域までイっちゃってるただならぬ関係もあるけど、まわりに呆れられても“本人たちさえ良ければ”ってのをあえて肯定的に力強く言えちゃえれば、ねぇ。なかなかそんな出会いってないもんです。
　キャラメル・モチーフの装丁もナイス！まさに手のかかったパッケージに収められた、滋養豊富、風味絶佳な六粒のキャラメル、といった趣の短編集。

ズバリとした切り口、ハッキリした色。

これでこそ、山田詠美。AtoZからこっち、試験的に表現の上で何か試したいことがあるような山田詠美さん。

AtoZの時には、まだ不完全だったような印象を受けましたが、風味絶佳では抜群ですね。1つ1つのお話の最後がブツ切れのような状態になっていて、余韻と言うか、いい意味でも悪い意味でも、読み手に印象を残します。

文章はうまいと思う。しかし、題材がいただけない。陳腐な男女の物語。登場人物は月並みで、その細かい心情を、まるで虫眼鏡で拡大したように、１つ１つ描写するものだから、全体としてストーリーに動きがない。結局、面白くなくて、途中で読むのを止めてしまった。
