タイトル作を含む、７編の短編が収められた短編集。
深夜のコンビニ、タクシーの中、夜の学校、通勤列車の中、などなど舞台となっている場所の設定が、現代人の実に身近な場所となっているのがうまい。

ちなみにタイトル作は、深夜のコンビニでコンビニ強盗に遭遇してしまうOLと小学生のお話。
どれもミステリーというよりは普通の小説という雰囲気。
「いじめ」がテーマになっている作品が多いのは、作者の関心の先が大人よりは子供、そして子供と大人の関係、大人になりきれない子供、たちへ向いているからなのだろうか。
「八月の雪」という作品が非常に好きだ。
どんな話なのかは、読んで知ってもらいたい。

級友がいじめで自殺したが、いじめグループは何の罪にも問われなかった。そのことが心にひっかかっていた充は、ある日、いじめグループの暴言につい言い返してしまう。逆上した連中から逃げようとした充は、車道に出てトラックにはねられてしまう…。本書収録の「八月の雪」は、事故で片足を失っただけでなく、それでもいじめグループがのうのうとしていることで世の中に失望し、引きこもりになってしまった充少年が、亡くなった祖父の文箱に若い頃書いた遺書を発見して、生きる意欲を取り戻すまでを描いた小品である。もとよりミステリではなく、凝ったストーリーがあるわけでもない。あるのは、現代日本が抱える問題点に正面から向き合った短編らしからぬ重いテーマと、それでも読者を勇気づけようとする、宮部みゆきらしい真っ直ぐなメッセージである。それが感動的で、読みながら不覚にも涙がにじんだ。
すべてではないが、他の作品でも、真面目に、誠実に生きている人へのエールが感じられる。宮部みゆきがベストセラー作家であるということは、日本のためになると断言できる。

何となく読んでいなかった宮部みゆき作品。初宮部作品です。

殺人がメインとなり、展開していく事が多いミステリー小説の中、
この小説では殺人がテーマの話はありません。
そういう小説にちょっと疲れていたので、すごく新鮮でした。
後味が良いというか、さっぱりする小説。

派手なトリックを求める方には少し物足りないかもしれません。
でも逆にトリックありきの小説ではないので、何度も読みたくなる、とも言えますよね。
是非このさみしくて、あったかい感じを味わって欲しいです。

時間待ちをする日が1ヶ月程あって、その時に暇つぶしとして買った本ですが、
暇つぶしになりませんでした、面白すぎてあっという間に読んでしまうので。
この後、次々宮部作品を買いました。
