じつは、宮部みゆきと私とは同じ年である。 だからどうなんだ、と人は言うだろうが、私にとっては驚き以外の何物でもない。同じ年にして、どうして、こうもあらゆる年代の人の気持ちがわかるのか……。

別に時代に苦労させられた世代ではないのだ。彼女の生い立ちをみても特別特異な経験をしているそうでもなさそうである。要は人間を見る目が確かで、暖かいのである。

そういうことが最もよく現れた作品がこの５編の短編集の中の「サボテンの花」だと思う。絶対何かある、とおもいながらも、最後まで結末が見えなかったし、見えたときの暖かい気持ち……。作者の描く「少年」はいつも素晴らしい。

　ミステリ、と言えば必ず死体が出て来るもの。そう思ったら大間違い。犯罪が起きなくてもミステリは存在するのです。宮部作品は、長編はもちろん読み応えもあるし、時代物もおもしろい。でも私は、こういった短編集が結構好き。短い話で読者を満足させるのって、結構大変なことだと思うからです。

　この中で一番好きなのは、『サボテンの花』。小学生の子どもたちが卒業研究にサボテンの超能力を証明する、という課題を選びます。担任教師は猛反対。しかし、本来研究課題は自由であるはず、と退職間近の教頭先生は子どもたちの味方になります。この教頭先生、一部の教師や親からは反感を買っている”教師らしくない教師”なのです。つまり、子どもたちの味方。子どもをきちんと”人間”として扱っている立派な大人。だからこそ、「校長」にはなれないらしい。
　子どもたちがどうしてそんな研究課題を選んだのか。それが卒業式のあとわかるのですが・・・ちょっと泣けます。学校にこんな先生がもっといたら。親がこんな風に子どもを見つめていたら。子どもたちにとって世の中はもっと楽しいところになるはずです。

　とても短い小説なのに、すごく心に残ります。「火車」とか「理由」とか、分厚い長編もいいんですが、こういう子どもたちの気持ちが丁寧に書かれている作品も大好きなのです。そういえば、『サボテンの花』が舞台になるんですよね。それも見てみたい気がします。

この中に掲載されている「サボテンの花」はとにかくオススメです。最後の子供達の手紙を見て、涙ぐんでいる副校長先生をちょっと想像しただけでこちらも温かい気持ちになって涙腺が緩みます。
子供達を教育するというのはこういうことを言うのだろうと思うし、相手の気持ちを考えるという意味でも勉強になる。きっとこの先生はさぞかしおいしい酒が飲めるでしょう。
是非、学校の先生に読んでもらいたい。
