新装版で復活しているのを見て、思わず買ってしまった。

久しぶりに読んでも、やっぱりいい。ミステリーをダシに、言葉がすれちがいながらも、少しずつ近づいていく少年と少女を描いた青春小説。「初恋」って、いいなぁ。

夏が詰め込まれているように感じます。あの独特の気分の高揚、気だるさ。
いつまでも鳴き止まない蝉の声によって完全に捕まえられたあの空気感が全編に漂っている。やっぱり夏に読んでほしいです。この作品にこめられる「夏」を肌で感じられるから。

それと、洒脱の効いた会話がすばらしい。タイトルの台詞が出てきた場面など、何箇所か爆笑してしまいました。

デビュー作ということを割り引いても、
人物造形がややステレオタイプすぎるような気がした。
じゃあ面白くないのかといわれると困る。
それぞれが話の中できちんと生きていて、結構楽しめる。
今の高校生にはいないかもしれないが、昭和生まれの人たちの中には主人公のような高校生はそこそこ多かったのでは。
見るものすべてが輝いて見えた高校生時代特有の雰囲気がよく出ている作品である。
出来れば高校生のときに読みたかったなー。
作品的には、「アルキメデスは手を汚さない」などの青春ものの踏襲である。
ミステリーというよりも、青春ものが好きな方には大変おすすめの一冊である。

気になったことが一点だけ。
登場人物のほとんどがタバコを吸うことに時代というか抵抗を感じたのは私だけかな。
「喫煙」が重要な伏線になってはいると思うのだが。
