刑事裁判がリアルに描かれている。そのリアルさが他の陪審サスペンスとは一味違う。それは著者Turowが名門ハーバード・ロー・スクールを卒業し、シカゴの法曹界で活躍してきた元検事の弁護士だから。登場人物たちのセリフ一つ一つが芝居染みていないのも、そのためだろう。

どう証言すれば陪審員によく映るか。どういう証人が判事の心象を悪くするか。そういう心理的駆け引きが非常に面白い。
そして、何よりも結末で明らかになる事件の真相。サスペンス慣れした私も、これには度肝を抜かされた。サスペンス通を自称する方々、ぜひ一度読んでみてください。

アメリカの小説にあまり馴染みのない私にとって、この作品を読み始めた途端に始まる、如何にもアメリカ的な言い回しで延々と続く心理描写や登場人物のセリフは少々きついものがあった。しかも、それが結構純文学的な表現である。ただ、文章自体はきちんとした日本語で読みやすい。訳がいいのだろう。きっとこれは何かの伏線なのだろうと思いながら、何とか上巻を読み終えた。正直結構きつかった。

しかし、下巻を読んでいるうちに一気に引き込まれた。上巻で延々と続いたことは全て伏線であり、これがなければ作品が成立しない重要な要素でもあった。文学的な要素と身ミステリーが見事に絡み合った作品である。投げ出さなくて良かったと本当に思う。アメリカでベストセラーになったのももっともである。

アメリカの裁判制度を殆ど知らないまま読んだのだが、知っていればこの作品がもっとリアルに感じられたのだろうと考えると、チョット惜しい気もした。

この小説は「推定無罪」の原書です。裁判のシーンが多いので専門用語が出てくるのでなじみのない人には少し読むのがしんどいかもしれませんが、ストーリーは非常に面白いです。特に最後にはあっと驚く結末が用意されています。また、それと同時にアメリカの法曹界を知ることもできます。辞書を片手に読む価値はあります。お勧めです。
